I met him down at Simcom in Scottsdale many years ago in a Cessna 400 series initial class. If I remember right, he had just bought a Cessna 421. Great guy to talk to, and a class act.

I was talking Wes Schwartz through energy management turns in his PA22/20 and the 31 inch mains pulled so much air that he got quite a bit less zoom in the pitch up from cruise to start the turn. His cruise at 2500 RPM with a strong O-320 was only 100. It was like a 235 hp Pawnee with that big square spreader. Flew like a pig even with little in the hopper. How did the Alaska boys get much done?

GumpAirLow density altitude! At Barrow and Kotzebue I routinely worked in DAs of -4000 feet during winter months. That air is thick as water. Plus, most of us could only dream of big tundra tires. 8.50s were big tires back then.
