Backcountry Pilot

Have two small-ish cracks in the steel bracket for the tailspring. Pics attached... I'd like to weld them, rather than replace the whole bracket. Thoughts? Anyone else try something similar?

Now that the "good stuff" (stuff that burned your skin and eyes so nice) isn't available anymore on the shelf, what's everyone using that works well to strip paint from aluminum?
