30+ years full-time Commercial pilot (fixed & rotor wing), A&P/I.A. Flown an hour or two. Mostly in dangerous & extremely remote places. Lived to spend it too...so far.
Interests
Bush planes, bush flying, homebuilt airplanes, airplane camping and traveling by small plane. Aviation in general.
I certainly wouldn't rule out the early models. I've flown a lot of Lycoming & Continental powered 172s, lots of them one right after the other, and there isn't much real-world difference between them...
Continental are good.
So are properly done Corvairs. Many hundreds flying. Very affordable compared to a Continental or Lycoming, especially at overhaul time.

Didn't know you had a Horton STOL set up on it. Just keep it. They're pretty good too from what I've heard.
Higly recommend the baggage door mod.Since you're an A&P/IA you can stick it on in a day...

"Things that ARE important to me:
-Under $30,000
-Low Fuel consumption
-Solid trustworthy engine/airframe (ideally proven over time)
-Capability of off-airport landings
-Low maintenance cost
-Minimum...
Good quality knife with +/- 4" blade. I prefer carbon steel (it sparks) and fixed vs. folding. Mors Kochanski has some good info for knives, axes, hatchets, etc. I like the Esee 4P or the Skookum.
Boy's...
I like the Springbar Outfitter 3 - makes no difference if there's wind, rain, snow, sleet, etc. - it takes it all in stride and one can stand up in it.

I suggest just getting a good old reliable and cost effective Cessna 172. It's a great trainer and an aircraft capable of so much more than that. With a STOL kit (e.g. Stein Aviation Sportsman STOL kit),...
