1600NM over (11) days (CHG#20)

It takes strength and fortitude to beat the air into submission.

My wife used to tell people the most dangerous part of the flight to Catalina was the drive from the airport down to the beach. [emoji1787]

During the 1970’s the CIS students went to Middle School in seaplanes**(1). The pilots could handle pretty big seas, like 3-4’ and strong winds! Very scary to me but, developed a love for aviation flying as a passenger. Passengers could fly right seat! Very cool.

Replaced engine oil with 20W50 Phillips X/C on the ramp this morning. It’s hot and dry in the SoCal sunshine. Feels good to be out of the humidity of Hawaii.

PIREP: The City of Torrance has convenient oil disposal. Also, South Bay Aviation has very good service as an FBO. The tower at Catalina (AVX) has a really friendly Unicom attendant.

R44 oil is looking nice and clean:

Torrance (KTOA) -> Nevada County (KGOO) . Headwinds the entire trip! (7) hours of flying which was actually very pleasant with the hydraulic controls.

Re: AIRMET&TAF: LLWS TURB STG WNDS: KGOO -> KRDD (CHG#15)

Wind this morning was 360 degrees (shearing to 020 degrees) @ 30-40 knots at 1500’ AGL from KGOO -> KRDD. Landing at KRDD there were moderate wind shears +/- 10 knots and bearing changes of about 10 degrees.

KRDD weather upon landing:

Flying through the Mount Shasta pass I prefer calm winds. Especially, aloft! Tomorrow I just may hang out at the pool (Holiday Inn) and start north again on Wednesday:

Staying one more day in KRDD is looking like a good decision. The route back to KONP has (3) AIRMETs —SURFACE -> FL140, LLWS & TURB.

NOTE: Dewpoint Spread is 47 Fahrenheit @ only 09:00PDT.

PIREP: Redding Jet Center is very nice, has shuttle and rental cars. Many large helicopter “H” pads. Tower very friendly. Beautiful views of snow covered mountains all around. NorCal still has plenty of backcountry flying. Amazing terrain. Many helos.

Re: KRDD Safe Harbor (CHG#17)

The “Windy App” adds clarity to winds aloft forecasts. Moderate turbulence is forecasted until 14:00 PDT and a venturi is located over KRDD. Not ideal for mountain flying especially with the contrast of temperatures right now.

Moderate turbulence, headwinds and slow ground speed was the scene today. The little ship and her captain did great! I can see the beautiful Oregon Coastal Sand Dunes again!

Great thread!

But when I read "Moderate turbulence, headwinds and slow ground speed" I thought you were talking about one of my trips!

Thank you for following the thread.

STOL is definitely a trade for speed and altitude! But, it’s not how fast however, in my book, it’s where you can land.

Today was the final leg. A short trip up the coast. The cross country in the R44 totaled about 1600NM over (11) days. Learned a lot and had a wonderful time!

Great trip, thanks for posting. I really liked the Catalina stuff. I’ve been hankering to fly there again. An old “California’s Gold” show was on the other day and Huell was at Wrigley’s Rancho Escondido on the island. We have Arabian horses so now my wife and daughter want to go there. Yes! We’ve been staying on our side of the Sierras until Cali all opens up, so C19 closures be gone already.

I most definitely appreciate the kind words. Catalina Island is literally a miracle of preservation. Everybody loves it there.

To the west an Island chain not so preserved...

Hawaii is hopefully implementing an “Immunization Passport” program on 11-MAY. An appropriately vaccinated person may bypass the (72) hour testing and/or (10) day quarantine. This will help people that need to travel freely.

Aloha!
