Turns out that the three kids in the house died in the fire. This is the kind of stuff that really, really, really gives the anti-airport crowd ammunition. A lot more than $50 worth.

Just a blunt assumption, but they had probably filed IFR to depart (sounds like they were headed for Klamath Falls) and climbed out through the fog when they developed engine problems. With no visual contact with the ground, they didn't have much discretion as to where they let down.
