Re: 180 question

If I am remembering my history correctly, the short wing Pipers were built out of remaining WW2 stocks of J-3/L-4 materials (just less materials per airplane), so I would guess the struts would be the same.

Re: 180 question

The front struts are the same extrusion on the PA-22 as the PA-18... The rear struts are different...

Did you find an extruder for it in the States? It's nice to hear about folks keeping manufacturing domestic.

Hello Lesuther,

Yes the company I use for the extruding is located in the USA. By far finding an extruder company in the USA that was willing to run a small amount of extrusions at a price a hobbyist could afford was the biggest challenge.

I like the fact that it is very low profile. How are the straps tensioned? How long does it take to attach and remove?

Hello PA12 _Pilot,

Thank you for the kind words. I did my best to keep it as low profile as possible to minimize drag yet still hold securely. The flat plate drag of the camera is more of a drag concern then the mount. It goes on and off in seconds. I use two straps in opposition to one another on either side of the strut rather than one that goes all around. By using the tail clamp piece, it isolates the mount and straps so that it cant rotate and even if it tried to rotate as one strap would slacken, the opposing one would become tighter. My mount is the only one that does this and its spelled out in my patent. The straps are made from industrial strength Velcro and are made to custom sizes from my drawings for each strut chord length. I have been testing this mount for a little over 5 years and have never had an issue using the velcro so I have a fair amount of air time and ground time testing to back that up.

Best regards,

Marc

Hello ScottF,

The new version I have in Beta testing at the moment will work with all piper struts as well. The only limiting concern on the new design is on struts of very short chord length. Right around 2" or less it gets tough as my straps become quite short. It has been tested on the front and rear Vee strut on an Interstate cadet and it worked great. Its also been tested on a Carbon Cub. Also on the cubs, the mount is low profile enough to contact the rear portion of the strut yet still clear the aileron cables running down the trailing edge.

I am working like mad to get the new design available by Christmas, but with holidays, my extrusion company leadtime might be my limiting factor.

Re: 180 question

Hello All,

I went to a local taildragger flyin and found my mount fits a few other aircraft as well. My standard Cessna version fits a Stinson 108 and the new smaller version prototype fit just about everything else there including a Waco and a Jungmeister. I plan to meet the owners of the Waco and Jungmeister to get some aerial footage from something unique.
