185'n North America

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

185'n North America

Thought I'd start a new thread about trips in the 185. Not much excitement in this first post but she will see a lot of North America from Alaska to Arizona, so hopefully some will be interesting.

On the way back from my meeting with Airframes Alaska today I was so enjoying the smooth, beautiful air that I had to snap a couple of photos.

First one is looking at Anchorage and then to the left across the water is the Kenai Peninsula where I live. Second photo is the Turnagain Arm. To drive from Anchorage to the Kenai Peninsula one has to go completely around this arm. A beautiful drive for sure but close to three hours. 35 minute flight in the 185.

Phil,

When the winds are ripping down Turnagain, stay low while crossing. I’ve crossed there when airliners coming down Turnagain approaching ANC we’re reporting severe turbulence, and below 1000 I had light turbulence at most.

Place can be a real blow hole at altitude.

Good tip. The chilly water-averse pilot would be high for a dry outcome in the event of engine failure, but I'd rather skim it than have to endure any significant turbulence.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Re: 185'n North America

Today was a very rare day here in this part of Alaska. Sunny, Cloudless, and Windless. Decided to go up in the 185 and scout some new areas. Here are a few of the many pictures I took. Found lots of new areas to explore next year.

Been overcast and rainy for a lot of August and I'll admit my attitude went south and I was ready to physically do the same thing. Today rejuvenated my spirit.

Beautiful pic's. Today was a banner day in Iowa too so I went looking at corn fields and found where the crude oil pipeline guys had to fix something in somebody's field.

Ok so I know I'm slow at times...and this was one of them. When I got to "...had to fix something in somebody'd field." I was expecting to see a picture of what they were fixing. I thought oh well he forgot to post the picture...I know I've done that before. Then I reread your post and then I reread it again and a light came on. Oh! I get what he is saying now! Too funny. And boy am I slow!

Re: 185'n North America

Another epic day so flew down to Seward to do some walking around and ice cream eating. Then headed over to one of my favorite spots...and what the heck? Somebody put a big hole in my beach and let almost all the icebergs out!

Actually a huge lake under the glacier was released and did that. Would have been extraordinary to watch. The shear power of nature.

Still beautiful though.
