2 Sweet Rides....

Last night I took the kids flying from KSLC to Spanish Fork (U77). We make the hop down there once in a while because the kids get to bring some quarters and visit the old-school candy machines and there is always something on the ramp to look at for Dad. This trip didn't disappoint.

Sitting next to the fuel dock was a red-hot Lancair Legacy. I had never checked them out too much but what a sexy plane!! There were two guys flight planning near-by and one of them struck up a conversation with my son so I joined in. Turns out they were headed to Florida, flying thru the night, and stopping only once for fuel in New Orleans. The pilot said the can do 275 mph all day long but they were looking for some tailwinds to make it quicker. I asked why they were going to fly to Florida and back the next day and the response was "just to put some time on this thing. It had a supercharged IO-550 and a big O2 bottle. What a machine!! They took off after me and climbed out of sight. When I got back to SLC, I checked FlightAware and put in N36XX and it showed them at 23,000ft. and 311 knots groundspeed!!!! I didnt have my cammy but here is a photo off the web.

When I got home, my new Plane and Pilot mag hads arrived with the sweetest LSA aricle about a new Luscombe built at Flabob Airport in Riverside, CA.. It has a Rotax 7 cylinder radial engine (110hp.) and very classic lines. What a creampuff.

Re: 2 Sweet Rides....

They've been flying that legacy around the last few days at least - it sounds cool, too.
My dad was down at the airport (U77) last night too and saw them take off. Did you see our 170b flying around? It wasn't me so go ahead and criticize any landings you witnessed.

That thing is definitely fast. Let's see him land a river bar though. :)

I think you mean Rotec. Rotax only makes little boxers.

Yep, Rotec R2800 Radial made in Australia. How cool is that?

Allan, I saw your 170 land right as I was approaching the run-up area. I was about to say hi, but the Lancair behind me came over the radio and wished us a good takeoff and told us to watch his from above, which we did.

That 170 looks great. Those planes seem so gracefull on landing compared to most.

Thanks - we were thinking about painting it - brown isn't my favorite color - but the paint is still in good shape and it does blend in on the dirt airstrips...

I've seen him land on a river bar. It was about a month ago on the Green River in Utah. But it wasn't in that thing! That is definitely a rocketship. He flew from Sacramento to Spanish Fork in 1.5 hours. You should have seen the smile on his face when he told me how fast his groundspeed was on the gps. Very cool ride indeed.

Flying is magic... till you hit the trees.

Re: 2 Sweet Rides....

For a single engine avgas burner, 90 mins SAC - Spanish Fork, UT that's something...... =D> Not sure the airlines can beat that by much, if at all.

Looking forward to seeing one of the Evolution models with the oil burnin turbine on the nose.......

Low and slow is where it's at, but I'm always impressed with brilliant engineering.

When you count all the time spent getting checked in and through security, I'm sure it's faster than an airline. 8)

Re: 2 Sweet Rides....

That's a fantastic looking Luscombe. Curious as to what it sounds like, the article says it turns at 3500 rpm, so it might not be quite as nostalgic sounding as perhaps it should be... Either way though, I'd be happy to put her through her paces.

John, I haven't heard it in person but I've watched vids and talked with guys who have seen it fly....sounds like crap  But I like the idea of a round motor up front.

Someday I'll make it to Mccall and we'll see if you remember how to drive a Luscombe

Re: 2 Sweet Rides....

If you go to the Rotec web site they've got videos with sound of both the 7 and 9 cylinder engines starting and running. Don't know about cruise RPM, but the start-up sounds like a classic round engine.

Lookin' forward to it! Hey, best of luck on the annual. I always enjoyed them, taking apart the old bird, and learning new things, right up until I had the sign on the dotted line....

I've got some time in a Legacy, It's a sweet airplane. I've seen 240K over the ground sipping just 10.5pgph.
