2013 OBP Fly In (day 2 video up)

Great fly in thus far. I drove in and set up camp yesterday afternoon. Weather has been kind of cruddy but everyone has been flying between showers.

A few pics

A raw video clip from Friday night. Fun was had by all. I plan on doing a full trip report soon. I took over 400 pictures and over an hour of video.

Re: 2013 OBP Fly In

I will share my TR with you in two different ways. The easy TR for me is the one with pictures. I will admit I probably spent more time filming the action than taking pictures. I love to take pictures but I am really starting to enjoy making videos a little bit more. That will come later.

So...... Back to what everyone is really interested in, the action!

I arrived on Friday afternoon at KPHD via my truck. Here was the welcome sign in the square in New Philadelphia, Ohio:
Image
Apparently you could get a flu shot there also. I believe Captain Donnus Emslie was administering them....?

Image
I set up my camp and Greg showed up. After the normal introductions everyone was itchin' to go play before it got too dark.

Image
Some guy showed up in a 150 Cessna. Not sure who he was but he flew the wheelpants off that sumbitch. Tight formations are fun.

Image
Our first destination, Arth International.

Image
Andy setting up a low pass in a 1940 J5 at Arth.

Image
Cal flew up from Memphis, TN in his home built Super Cub. I was eyeballing it all weekend. A really good looking and capable machine.

Image
I don't believe they were talking about flying, or anything remotely close to landing on hilltops, or crosswinds, or flap settings on departure. No way. The man in the middle is Dick Arth. A farmer who started flying to check on his cattle. Here is an article about him done by the local paper:http://www.timesreporter.com/newsnow/x1721569740/Pilot-enjoys-hobby-from-his-private-airport

From Arth we jumped Interstate 77 and played in the Fiesta Bowl across way. (That may make it into the video). Then we were off to Emslies STD awareness course. The wart was my base for operations for about 30-40 minutes while I took pictures and video. There is a good description of the STD Awareness Course in Greg's video: https://vimeo.com/54235239

Cal, setting up for a landing.

Image
The sunset on the way back to our base for the weekend.

Image
A good photo op.

After a tasty meal at the restaurant on the airport, and a movie of some of the boys hunting coyotes from their Super Cubs, we BS'ed by the campfire for a few hours before turning in.

Image
The next morning revealed an awesome rainbow.

Image
and a nice sunrise

Image

Image
Yes, heaven on earth.

The Local EAA Chapter held a pancake breakfast for us, and the local community in their awesome hangar. The hangar kept everyone dry during waking hours. Some people slept in the loft above the office area also! Nice accommodations for sure!! (I didn't get any pictures, however.)

Image
Our flight back into the Ohio Bush Saturday revealed the start of some the fall colors. Not yet to peak!

Image
Nick and his son in the Kitfox.

Image
First stop Saturday was Paul Harvey.

Image
Greg filming Rollie leaving Paul Harvey to go get his wife in Zanesville.

Next stop: Petroleum Point at Graham's place.

Image

Image
Cool to finally see this sign in person.

Image
Joe's Carbon Cub on Petro Point. Complete with a smoke system! ( more on that later )

Image

Image
TC's CC on PP. Complete with Badass paint job.

Image
Lou doin Jump n Duck.

Image
Graham's 100 Year Licence Plate barn

From there we hit the gravel bars in the river.

TC draggin the tailwheel

And from there we were back to Emslies!

Image

More video to come.........

Image
Back at the airport for an awesome lunch with a concoction of the famous beans.

Image
Some headed out to beat the weather home.

Image
After the $10 chicken dinner, which was amazingly delicious, I got to hitch a ride in Joe's Carbon Cub in some extremely smooth air. Thanks for ruining me Joe......

You know, I didn't fly in to the fly in. I was bummed about that. But I still got to experience everything thanks to a bunch of awesome people. The Ohio Bush Planes fly in is a destination for everyone, from local people who want to see a bunch of backcountry airplanes, to real bush pilots, and to wannabe's too. All are welcome here. Odds are pretty dang good that the OBP inspired a few more youngins this past weekend to get into aviation too. Everybody loves big tires!!!!

If they say they don't, it's just cause they are jealous.

Not sure why I look like a mermaid coming out of the pump-jack but other than that you do great work! If those pipelines crap out on you I'm sure Natty Geo will pick you up. Thanks for documenting the debauchery and being a bro in general!

Mr. Breeden brought sexy back showing up in that 150! He bagged "The Wart" at Emslie's STD Awareness Aerocross Course.
--It was the same hill where I met Breeden oh so long ago as he climbed barefoot out of his beloved orange Cub after showing us how to back down a hill without beta.

2013 OBP Fly In (NOW WITH TR)

You could pretty much say that he was having more fun than should be allowed with wheel pants on. Bob is the man!

Re: 2013 OBP Fly In (NOW WITH TR)

Like FARMAULE, I really wanted to be there, but the shutdown had nothing to do with my absence. Our son is getting married in a couple of weeks and my honeydo list before company comes had me tied in knots most of the weekend. I head that FARMAULE made it to Cedar Crest where I keep my plane, but I wasn't there. I need to go flying with him soon. Hopefully a year from now we'll both show up at the OBP gathering. There is a lot I'm not comfortable trying with my Maule yet, and it will hurt to have a 150 outfly me, but that's the way the learning curve bends...

Evan - I just stumbled into your pictures and video. (I still can't find my way around here). There was some playing up here yesterday too.
Thanks for going to the fly-in and for taking charge of the picture taking! See you soon. John

Re: 2013 OBP Fly In (NOW WITH TR)

Almost exactly a month later, I finally got a video up. I just forced myself to do it last night. It was my first honest attempt at narration and a quasi docu-vid, but it turned out good.

I must say the narration is the most difficult thing in the whole process. Not only what to say, but how to say it. I didnt write anything down, because I would have to hear what it sounded like in relationship to the video anyway. My computer crashed a couple times and my puter is pretty darn quick. I lost some audio in the opening and forgot to re record it after the crash so the first round of narration stayed in #-o . So I was pausing and saying uhh, uhh, uhh, a lot. But I got the awkward pauses figured out after that. :D
