2015 Mack Mesa Photo Thread

I thought it might be easier to start a new thread for photos and videos from Mack, so I moved my post from the event thread over to here. Looking forward to seeing everybody's pictures!

As always, we had a great time at Mack. Thanks to Steve, Lexi, Ladd, and Rob for putting on a hell of a party. I look forward to this one every year. =D>

Unfortunately, the Wx kept a lot of people away, but the hearty souls who did show up were a bunch of really good eggs. BTV came up from Texas, Pops from Nevada, Rezrider from New Mexico, Mountain Matt and Soy came over from the front range, Blu was there with his new SuperSTOL, and numerous other good folks showed up as well. Here's a little trip report of the goings-on.

Leaving Wyoming, the clouds looked a little ominous, but it was going to take more than that to keep me from getting to fly the SQ in the backcountry all weekend!
Image

Hanging out with Pops made it worth the trip, even if we had ended up stuck inside the whole time.
Image

Friday started cloudy, but shaped up beautifully.
Image

We used the opportunity to go do some playing in Utah.
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Mineral Canyon had a muddy spot in the middle of the strip, but we were able to land and taxi around it.
Image

We didn't have any fun at all... :^o
Image

Next we headed over to Mexican Mountain. Anybody traveling near Green River, UT needs to make sure and put this one on your list. Spectacular!
Image

Image

Image

Image

Pizza in Fruita Friday night, followed by tunes around the campfire provided by Pops and Soy. Doesn't get much better than that.
Image

Saturday started cloudy, but cleared for the spot landing contest.
Image

Image

Image

We also enjoyed the occasional fly-by.
Image

Next we headed out for the poker run. Flew with a fun crew of guys to Dolores, Hubbard, and Steamboat.

Three of my favorite guys to be with in the backcountry.
Image

Dolores was in beautiful shape.
Image

A happy, motley crew.
Image

A happy idiot with his borrowed toy.
Image

Soy at Dolores.
Image

Hubbard was next.
Image

Image

It's as pretty at one end as it is at the other.
Image

Steamboat was next, with some great views.
Image

BBQ dinner when we got back, then we set to work building a small little campfire.
Image

We had entertainment of the percussive variety, with bowling balls flying approximately 1 mile. With the right bowling ball, this guy has cut a railroad tie in half at a half mile!!!
Image

We also had great tunes, and the band played late into the night.
Image

Image

Some adult beverages were consumed, but everybody survived the night...more or less.
Image

Here's a cool river confluence I saw on the way home. The small tributary coming into the main current is enough to turn the entire Green River completely muddy from that point down!
Image

I captured more than 60 GB of video for the weekend, and still managed to miss some of the very best shots! Stay tuned for a video at some point.
Image

Another great fly-in in the books. Thanks again to all who put it on, and to all who showed up and made it so special.

Great pictures mate =D> , I'll see if I got any worth posting. Those that braved the weather were rewarded with a fun weekend. While the flying is as good as always, I'll say that the people are the best part of fly-ins. It's awesome to meet so many good folks.
I'm just glad that I didn't spend the night listening to banjo music in the mud where the hills have eyes!
It's like Pops said, "if you don't go to war then you never have any war stories".

Thanks to all that made it possible.

Great pictures everyone! What a great bunch of friends to spend a weekend with! I echo what Ranch Pilot said and thank everyone at Mack for a FANTASTIC fly-in.

Here is a sample of my memorable weekend.

Passing over Breckenridge, CO.
Image

Isolated weather on my way over to the Western Slope.
Image

Passing by Capitol Peak, perhaps my favorite 14er in CO.
Image

Mount Sopris looked vibrant with the dark skies surrounding it.
Image

View from the cabin of a 180 over the Uncompahgre Plateau.
Image

The views while camping the first night.

When the engine is running, I don't think Pops stops smiling.
Image

Most likely the best grass strip in all of CO.
Image

Waiting for the showers to pass at Mack. I was impressed to see so many bushwheel planes in one area.
Image

The gang getting dinner at the Hot Tomato in Fruita, CO.
Image

The Saturday spot landing contest was a ton of fun. A lot of people showed up to look at planes and watch the contest.
Image

Blu's beautiful Just SuperSTOL was a hit.
Image

Pops hitting the mark in the spot landing contest.
Image

Soy knows how to fly his J3 Cub.
Image

The Crazy Daisy.
Image

Pops teaches us mortals how it's done.
Image

This Stearman was simply too cool!
Image

Poker run at Steamboat Mesa.
Image

A great group of pilots at Dolores Point.
Image

Departing from Dolores Point for Hubbard.
Image

Ranch Pilot lining up to take off at Dolores Point.
Image

The gang at Hubbard taking in the beautiful sights.
Image

Last stop on the poker run, getting my card at Cisco, UT.
Image

The Saturday night festivities at Mack were top notch.
Image

Gunnison, CO appears beneath the scattered layer.
Image

The skies cleared over the Arkansas Valley.
Image

The Sangre de Cristo range trapped in the clouds.
Image

Dropping in over the front range on my last leg home. Things are sure green with all the recent rain.
Image

Thanks again everyone for making this one heck of a weekend!

Awesome pics guys! Kills me to have missed it. We got over 2" of rain this weekend. While we need it, sure wish it would have come at a different time.

Matt, where did you spend your first night? Great views.

We missed you Cory.

That spot is a short, rough patch south of Mack. I had to hike a little to view the sunset, but it was well worth it.
