2016 BCP Survey Update: What’s your Current Plane?

Back in 2011 Shortfielder wrote:

There are a little over 2400 members here, and I was wondering the % of plane types here.
Link: https://www.backcountrypilot.org/forum/i-was-just-wonderin-what-kind-of-planes-we-had-here-7307
That was back in 2011. It is now 2016.

Subsequently, Rans, Just, Zenith, CubCrafters, Bearhawk, and many others have all introduced new models. Unlike earlier, the BCP website now also allows >10 categories for surveys, so I have expanded & updated the choices.

Please enter a single response. If you do not own a plane, enter a single response at the end.

If you own several planes, choose your favorite.
If your “plane” is not flying, and still in the construction or refurbishing stages, that’s fine; select your plane.
If you don’t even own a plane (like me), there is a choice at the end for you as well.
If I have left off your plane, please understand that the polling matrix only permits 30 entries.

Piper tailwheel - sort of. Used to be a piper trike, now an exp. tailwheel.

Wow...

With 55 responses so far, Cessna trikes and tail wheels account for almost half the planes. I guess Cessna 120, 140, 170, 180/85, and 195 aircraft rule the day.

Maybe I missed it, but no choice for Super Cub (or experimental Super Cub)? And no, Carbon Cubs don't count <g>

I might have missed it, was there an American or ACA tailwheel option?

Like Scottf was saying, I was thinking certified Supercub would fall under Piper Tailwheel category? Re “Experimental” SuperCub such as the SQ2, ...yeah...good point. In hindsight I’d add that. The problem is, if I redo the poll entries, I found that the entire results are wiped out and everything gets re-zeroed. When I put this thing up at first, I entered my response, then added a category, and the whole poll reset to zero. Good point re the Experimental SuperCub though.

Excellent point. I should have combined that with the Amphib-Float category.

Finally, I hope people ( like me ) who don’t own a plane will pipe up. Yeah it is a bit humbling  (Not me in the photo)

And that picture has to be a fake... No one looks that longingly at a 172....

I dunno. There is a lonely/abandoned straight tail 172 sitting at the airport that I occasionally find myself looking longingly at. I'm not sure what it is but there is something about that specific plane that draws me in.

I went through a tough stretch in my life where I had 10 YEARS of flying on one page of my logbook. A 172 was a good looking bird in those days, anything I could hop in was a blessing.

Re: 2016 BCP Survey Update: What’s your Current Plane?

No "looking longingly" at a C-172? I couldn't disagree more. If I had all the money in the world, I'd own one of everything. All airplanes are sexy cool - though some are a bit more "funky cool"... I currently own a 65 7ECA (the original one, with the oleo gear and O-200 engine) and it's a blast to fly. I'm also building a Bearhawk Patrol that will eventually replace the 7ECA, because I do NOT have all the money in the world.

Many years ago, I was walking a long way across the Oshkosh flight line, when a red-and-white VW Bug 'stretch limo convertible' thing (aka "Big Red 1") pulled up next to me to offer a ride. I recognized Paul, and about two nanoseconds later realized that sitting next to him was Bob Hoover! I may have "gushed" a little at meeting two of my all-time heroes together at the (apologies to Disney) "happiest place on earth"... They talked with me for a few minutes, and I tried my best to get them to talk about some of their great exploits. Instead, Bob wanted to know what I flew (at the time, Army OH-58A scout helicopters, a rental Grumman Tiger, and a rental Piper Arrow). He wanted to know everything about the OH-58A, asking all kinds of questions about equipment, flying characteristics, etc. Then he (Bob Hoover, mind you) said "I envy you getting to fly those things. It must be really great!" I told him I was much more impressed with the P51s he and Paul flew, not to mention his Shrike Commander, and all the other cool airplanes he flew at Edwards. Then I asked both of them what was their favorite plane they'd ever flown. Bob answered first, and said that his favorite plane was whichever one he was flying at the time - that ALL airplanes teach us something, and that every one of them is unique in their own way. Paul's answer was similar, though he admitted a preference for tail wheels. I could not believe how nice and "genuine" both guys were to me (and everyone else they've ever interacted with, for that matter). And the lesson they taught me that day was to appreciate the airplane I was lucky enough to be flying that day, and try to learn everything it had to teach me. Instead of lusting after the Columbia 400, enjoy the little Citabria for what it is and for what it can teach me. That conversation has added immensely to my enjoyment of aviation. Carpe airplane!

CONCLUSION:
After careful analysis of the data it has been confirmed that Luscombe pilots spend much more time flying and less time posting on internet forums than Cessna tail wheel pilots.

Re: 2016 BCP Survey Update: What’s your Current Plane?

Just for the Record...

I don't own an airplane; I don't even have a PPL. But, I've been an Aviation enthusiast all my life, and to tell the truth, I envy every single one of you.

In my short time here at BCP, I have read many wonderful Stories, seen some awesome Photos, and have learned much about what 'backcountry' Flying is all about.

In my mind, you folks come the closest to what it must have been like in the Golden Age of Barnstorming; flying for the pure enjoyment of it, landing just about anywhere you want to at the end of the day (well, almost), and spending a nice night in beautiful country, with good friends close by.

Thanks to Zane for all of his work maintaining the Site, and have Fun, everyone!

Don't own right now either. Haven't flown military in a few years while working on a new career path. Did fly some in a flight club and will do again next year. It always seems that I'm "a few years" away from purchase.

Re: 2016 BCP Survey Update: What’s your Current Plane?

I'll stick with my 63 P172D for the rest of my flying life. It's a good little airplane, well within my aging skill level, and it does what I want it to. It's well enough equipped for IFR flight that I feel comfortable in the clouds (although a stretch of a couple hours of solid IMC is more tiring than it used to be), with an approach certified 430W, a backup navcom, and an ADF. It is also ADS-B Out compliant. It hauls enough that I can go camping with it, and if I keep the fuel load low enough, I can fill the seats with reasonably sized people for a local sight-seeing flight. It handles high elevations pretty well, as well as any 180hp 172, and it's a pretty OK short field airplane. It's not very fast, but then, neither am I. The only time I wish it was faster is the annual trek to OSH and back, but it does OK at 115 knots (no wind), and that's the only really long flight I typically take.

Re: 2016 BCP Survey Update: What’s your Current Plane?

I'm reluctantly in the 'no plane' category still, despite efforts to the contrary.

The stars in our financial world have finally aligned and timing is perfect to buy a plane but the choice has been excruciating.

My wife and I are agonizing over the many combinations and permutations of:
- mission/budget
- wheels/floats/amphibs
- slow/fast
- high time/low time airframe or engine
- easy (familiar tricycle)-to-fly/harder-to-fly (tail wheel)
- modern panel/basic 6 pack
- certified/experimental

Choices and decisions. It hasn't been easy. I won't hijack further on this thread. I'll ask for help narrowing the field in a separate thread.
