The posts are so cool..

Yes, I know the businesses you are referring to. You were stationed in Newport, Oregon? Small world. If you are arriving in town again let me known. We can take the chopper for ride.

I appreciate your input!

There are many EMF hazards throughout the world that are extremely powerful and no shielding is possible. The .JPG below is a well known example. Kaena Point, Oahu. The radiation is classified as a health issue.

Dangerous energy levels not in the visible, aural, or infrared can not be mitigated and must be physically avoided.

Glad you are onboard this thread. Good topics.

Funny. I usually get a permit from the Dept. of Land and Natural Resources to hike the ridge to the east of Kaena Point when I visit. I never read anything about the radiation until this threat.

DNLR may not know the conditions up there. Do you have a copy of the permit? I would like to see what it says?

Sorry. I don't have a hiking permit here. It was always a poor quality xerox copy form at the Honolulu DNLR office. I've always had to go there in person to get the permit. Maybe it's on line now.

I live pretty close to DNLR HQ in downtown Honolulu. I have picked up permits there too, mainly for camping. But, Island campgrounds have all turned into “Homeless camps” so we gave that up many years ago. I pretty much fish (troll) Kaena Point I don’t hike or bike there anymore.

Yokohama Bay just before Kaena Point.

Re: 2019.03.17 Semi-Backcountry helo

Ah, great pics! Wish I was there. The last time I stopped along the coast road near the end of the "improved" part, it was pretty scary. We only stayed a few minutes and never got too far from the car. I imagine it hasn't gotten any better. On the bright side, the parking at the ridge top for the trail is perfectly safe--except for the radiation! Maybe that's why my lunch was always so nice and warm when I took it out of my daypack.

I used to know people who worked on the antennas. But, I’m pretty sure the transmit switch wasn’t keyed during the time on the ridge for them hopefully [-X

Being a pilot, we always stayed pretty far away from the actual antennas. :(

The little ship made her first 50.0 hour inspection! Collective activated Hobbs = 49.20hours. The engine broke in perfect using Phillips 20w-50 “M” mineral oil (black bottle).

2019.03.25, 49.20Hr. (Chobbs)
Oil 0.20 hour *
Fuel 15.5/Hr **

* Lycoming Service Instruction #1427C states 0.006 x BHP x 4 / 7.4 = QT/HR

Noted: Cadet is derated from 260 HP to 185 HP. Therefore, the oil burn equation uses 185HP instead of the normal 280HP for the O540
POH: R44 Cadet O540-F1B5 185@2718 RPM (TCDS 260@2800 RPM max 0.80/hr)
Oil Formula: 0.006 * 185BHP * 4.000/7.4 = 0.6 max qts per hour R44
N18EK: RHC R44 Cadet #3042 = 0.20 QTS / HR
** Fuel 100LL 15.0 - 16.0 gal/HR Training flights: hovering, short X-C, etc.

The Oregon “Trade winds” have subsided and the coast is back to “June gloom”. Overcast & light winds. Today was a nostalgic flight to Wakonda State Airfield. It was the first place I camped overnight in the Scout. Picked up a friend at the FBO and enjoyed the morning. Please join me as we venture to this remote grass strip. It’s a long video so grab a coffee and relax a bit...Aloha :D

2019.05.17(Friday) “Show and Tell”

Friday was “Open House” for the local schools at Newport Municipal Airport ( KONP) . The Manager of the airport (who is a great guy), asked me if I could bring the R44? I get treated very well by the City and Airport so, of course I said yes. They wanted me to demonstrate the versatility of the helicopter. So, I hovered forwards & backwards, performed quick stops, and executed some high performance takeoffs. Really was an honor to be invited. Below are just random pictures of the event.

Participants:

Lincoln County School District
Life Flight Helicopters, Air Ambulance
Lincoln County Sheriff Department
Newport City Police
Federal Firefighters (KONP)
Stinson 105, private owner https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stinson_Voyager

Black Bear near Airport

Newport Municipal Airport has a good size Black Bear living on the East side of the perimeter fence. Lucky the larger animals rarely breach the fence. The coastal mountains have significant wildlife from my observations and reading.

2019.09.14 Helo Backcountry Video Experience:

Join me for a beautiful Saturday on the Oregon Coast. It’s good to be out of the tropics for a few weeks.

A retired FAA guy and myself decided to take a flight before the KONP (Newport, OR) Bar-B-Que lunch. Now here’s a pop up quiz...What am I doing in the first (20) seconds of the video under the helicopter?

Mahalo for watching!

2019.09.19 Quick Flight to Siletz

The Siletz River Valley is really a beautiful place. Much of the river is hidden and is not very accessible. Decided to scout around a bit this morning. Very much want to fly to Madras but, getting over the Coastal Mountains was negated by clouds and was not too promising.

Re: 2019.09.19 Selitz River

Siletz river is a gem. It was a nice day today to have a running aircraft.

So what was the plastic drain plug for? Pitot static? Something else that has condensate?

Thank you for watching. Sorry for the misspelling!

You guessed it! It’s the low point in the pitot static lines:

2019.09.20 waiting for WX @ 10:30 PDT

As mentioned weather at KONP can be unpredictable. Summer is fading away into Fall Season. Today was one of those days where I packed up, preflighted, fueled and then the field went IFR. Not forecasted weather per se.

This video reminds me of an old Hollywood saying “Hurry up and wait”. Sometimes it’s not picture perfect and waiting out weather is a way of life. My below video is about the grunge work, the activity not seen in the glamorous videos we are used to.

Update 12:00 PDT: WX is back to VFR and I’m flying to the backcountry...Hopefully.

2019.09.23 Sand Dunes on the Equinox

Today was fantastic to fly a helicopter. Found sand dunes to land on which look good to camp on one day. Please see video:

On 25-SEP concluded a flight: KONP.S45.PFC.5S4.KONP . Practicing a few off the grid LZs too.
