206 trip WA to AK

Well after checking the last thread of the run to AK by Barnstormer I figured I would start one of my upcoming trip. I flew mine down to Bremerton, WA back a few months ago for an engine build by Avian Aeronautics and now my schedule is working out to go grab it and bring it back north to Homer.

My plan is to launch the morning of the 31st and just put a long day of flying in probably just heading up the trench route depending on the weather. Going to hopefully just make it a quick and dirty 2 day trip but if anyone else is along the way or also making the trip let me know. I'll update with pics and airport info, fuel prices, customs info and such along the way.

Oh and here's a video from the first start on the fresh engine. I put a few hours on it and you really don't realize how worn out your old engine is till you fly a fresh one.

Re: 206 trip WA to AK

I'm interested in your take on Avian's overhaul, and customer service, both now and maybe in the future as time goes by. I have a 470 overhaul in the future a few years down the road and would like to have some options in mind as the time draws closer. I thought about having Steve Knopp (P.Ponk) do it, but they recently told a friend of mine the only engine overhauls they were taking on was their "470-50" conversions.

Highly recommend them I have flown several of their engines in the past and all of them were virtually maintenance free, smooth running and went to TBO. Go stop in there and have Pat give you a tour of the facilities and you'll feel very comfortable with them doing an overhaul. I'll be taking this one back in 5 years or so when I time it out.

Whoohoo! More trip picks coming.

For those of who haven't done it get yourself a CanPass. Opens up a lot more customs airports and since they have already vetted you Canadian customs isn't likely to come to your plane. That was my experience bringing the SQ2 down and taking it back up.

Can the coastal flight be done without stopping in Canada?

Yeah it can be done but customs with canpass and eapis really isn't bad to swing through Canada once you have it figured out.

Yes definitely a long range tank operation with good winds. One of the 206's I fly at work has sierras and flint's on it almost doubling a stock long range 206. Wouldn't be a problem at all with something like that but who really wants to sit in a 206 for that long

Re: 206 trip WA to AK

Man I hear ya...WX was CAVU all the way to Anc. Picked up a C206 I had repainted. Decided to do the coast route on wheels with the good wx. #-o (not best decision I ever made) Left before daylight from just north of Seattle. Refueled at Ketchikan and Yakutat. Very long and boring flight varied from 10,000 to 10 feet along beaches to break up the boredom. 12.5 hrs. later landed at Lake Hood strip. so rummy I could barley get out of plane. #-o Don't think I would do that again... [-X Way to much over water on wheels in my opinion.

I hear ya on the wheels over water I get enough of that all summer working so if I have the option I'll try to stick to some land under me.

Re: 206 trip WA to AK

Looks like my trip is getting underway as I am sitting at Anchorage airport catching a flight to Seattle. Tough to leave AK right now with the weather we have been enjoying. Here is a couple pics from the last few days working. ImageImageImage
