3 Blade Prop on a C180

Hi
Anyone put a 3 blade on their C180 lately?...

0-470U engine. Have a seaplane prop but looking at the MT three blade...lighter and quieter.

Thanks

GO for it. If you are on floats, the MT will suffer far less from water erosion. If on wheels, I think you'll find performance to be excellent.

And, the weight savings is great as well.

My second choice would be the Black Mac 86 inch three blade, also a great prop on the 470s.

Thanks MTV...

It's not on floats but has the kit and the prop but with bubble windows, mud flaps etc I'm lucky to get 125kts in the cruise :-(
I've read you lose 4kts just with the F/P prop alone.

Thanks again

Owned 3 180's over the years, never had a 3 blade but always wanted one. Do you have to change the engine mount as well?

Re: 3 Blade Prop on a C180

Thanks for the help..reached a dead end here...MT in Germany [closest to me] bizarrely didn't really want to know and referred me to their USA distributor "as they have many STCs"....

Helpful guy in the States but there isn't a 3 blade available for the 0-470-U...2 blade is available but has no noise reduction over a standard prop.

14lbs lighter though...

Evidently with the MT the engine mounts don't have to be changed.

I think the factory has pretty much left it up to the distributors to acquire the STC's, and Flight Resource in Wisconson has gotten quite a few. That's an expensive process, though.

Anyway, too bad there isn't an approval for your plane.

I just put an MT on my 170, and it's all good so far. I've run them on several other airplanes, and have always been really impressed with performance and weight savings.

Re: 3 Blade Prop on a C180

Not on a 180, but...

I hunted around and found an overhauled Hartzell Top Prop for my 206. I decided to go that route because a lot of the working 206's are going to them, I learned later mostly because they are cheaper than the McCauley. Anyway, called the dealer, asked if the one they had would fit my airplane. They weren't positive, so they did the smart thing and faxed the request with model/serial numbers to Hartzell (I have a copy) and Hartzell said yes it will fit and issued the STC. I say great, go ahead and ship it to Alaska. So, the STC paperwork arrives separately and dumb me, I read it. Well, come to find out, my model 206 is an old one and is NOT listed on the STC for that model prop. So I call Hartzell and spoke with the exact person who signed the STC document. Oops, we screwed up. This one is the long hub version and you need the standard. "It should fit anyway, it will just stick out a little further and you can always get a field approval, right? "(exact words). Oh, we can refund the cost of the STC to the dealer but the prop is yours.

Amazing.

Well, a phone call to the prop shop clears it up on my end, they are going to stand behind it and it is on it's way back, all the way from Alaska. I must say that if you need a prop, Leading Edge in Stevensville, MT is an honorable outfit and are really going to get screwed on this deal, thanks to the manufacturer not being able to read their own information. They are considering contacting the Feds as might I if in their shoes.

The point of this story is that if you expect any degree of customer service, stay away from Hartzell. I will be getting a McCauley as soon as I can afford a new one.

I have seen the same admonition on other sites as well...."Stay away from Hartzell" My buddy is a Mooney fan and he swears that Hartzell has invented difficult SB's and driven AD's only to reduce their exposure and sell new props. I'm listening.
