Not on a 180, but...
I hunted around and found an overhauled Hartzell Top Prop for my 206. I decided to go that route because a lot of the working 206's are going to them, I learned later mostly because they are cheaper than the McCauley. Anyway, called the dealer, asked if the one they had would fit my airplane. They weren't positive, so they did the smart thing and faxed the request with model/serial numbers to Hartzell (I have a copy) and Hartzell said yes it will fit and issued the STC. I say great, go ahead and ship it to Alaska. So, the STC paperwork arrives separately and dumb me, I read it. Well, come to find out, my model 206 is an old one and is NOT listed on the STC for that model prop. So I call Hartzell and spoke with the exact person who signed the STC document. Oops, we screwed up. This one is the long hub version and you need the standard. "It should fit anyway, it will just stick out a little further and you can always get a field approval, right? "(exact words). Oh, we can refund the cost of the STC to the dealer but the prop is yours.
Amazing.
Well, a phone call to the prop shop clears it up on my end, they are going to stand behind it and it is on it's way back, all the way from Alaska. I must say that if you need a prop, Leading Edge in Stevensville, MT is an honorable outfit and are really going to get screwed on this deal, thanks to the manufacturer not being able to read their own information. They are considering contacting the Feds as might I if in their shoes.
The point of this story is that if you expect any degree of customer service, stay away from Hartzell. I will be getting a McCauley as soon as I can afford a new one.
