Re: 3 Survive Plane Crash - SW Idaho

I do recall this story and I saw the GA interview and all the subsequent press about the crash. I am happy the familiy survived, let me say that first. Second, let me also say I have made more than my share of bad decisions - no question. But to write a book, perform a book signing in Idaho, intermix "devine intervention" into the conversation after you flew a heavily loaded 172 into a storm, in the mountains at dusk, after the same storm already forced you down at the Rome airport and attempt to profit from this event [-X [-X I understand this is the world we live in now- still does not sit well w/ me - IMHO.

If they intend to keep the money, then I agree. On the other hand, they could donate proceeds to SAR or pilot education. The gentleman who created No Greater Burden http://m.aopa.org/asf/video/no-greater-burden.html did us all a service, and set the example for honor the face of tragedy, IMHO.

Completely concur! I saw this example when it first came out. I watched it twice, but it is very difficult to watch. This was a great video and great learning tool associated with human behavior.

Re: 3 Survive Plane Crash - SW Idaho

Just wondering.. how many people have bought an aviation related book from an author who has intersperse the book with stories of stupid tales, crashes he survived, and bad calls that put him in the spot he found himself in. Why hack on a guy that writes a book about his stupid mistakes and trys to sell it. Many Many pilots before him have done the same thing and we all run out and buy the book cause it is good reading or full of entertaining stories of the old days of aviation.

I have made more than my share of mistakes and on more than one of them, divine intervention is the only reason I can come up with that I am still alive to type this. It damn sure was not my stellar decision making skills that got me and a buddy back to the airport after taking off in a 172 into known icing conditions when I had a whopping 100 hrs in the log book and thought I was invincible. That was just one stupid pet trick I did in an airplane, there are more than I care to remember. They say the big man watches out for fool and idiots... I dont think I am a fool, but I have done some foolish things. I dont think I am an idiot (dont ask my wife, she may have a different opinion) but I have done some idiotic things in airplanes, boats, snowmachines etc. There is not one good reason I have lived through some of these things that I can think of. I know for certain I should have been dead countless times but I walked away without a scratch and only needed a new set of shorts.. maybe new sneakers too cause it ran down my leg and ruined the damn shoes too LOL.

I like "me-n-Joe" stories, but this strikes me as not the typical me-n-Joe. Someone else could write the story, but I wouldn't be comfortable keeping the money if I was telling the tale on myself. It seems like poor repayment of the risks and dollars it took to save them. YMMV.
