310 fork on a 1960 C172?

Hello All,

A friend of mine is considering adding a 310 fork and 600 tire to his 1960 C172. In the past this was an easy 337 to get, but seems its tougher now. We are in Los Angeles area and curious if anyone can share a 337 form for the 310 fork on a narrow body C172? If we were in Alaska this likely would be a non issue since its such a common mod.

I had heard it was an option on the narrow body C172 but I am beginning to think that was incorrect info. I know the T41 had it and a few later model wide body C172 but he cant find it in his parts manual. On my C182p it shows as an option and when I install mine its just a logbook entry. Would be great if it were the same for him. Anyhow any advice or help would be appreciated. Feel free to PM me if you have a 337 you want to share and I will reply with my email.

Getting field approvals anywhere, even in AK is problematic now. Most FSDOs no longer allow individual Inspectors to just issue field approvals, they all have to go through a committee.....and if you don't understand the implication there: "committee combined with government", good luck.

Also, the T-41 is NOT a 172 derivitive, they are all on the Cessna 175 type certificate, not the 172 TC.

Good luck but this has come up on a number of sites recently, and mechanics who are in the know have said it probably won't work.

Tell him to call Airglas and purchase their STCd nose fork kit. That also approves a number of different main and nosewheel tire sizes.

Thanks MTV,

We were trying to avoid the Airglas since he only needs 600 on the nose. it looks fumy with a 600 on an airglas fork. I may have to tell him to forgo the HD fork option sadly...

I’m with AtoC. Landis is a lot of money to render one’s airplane fugly. Only makes sense if you’re going with an 800 or bigger.

I bet if he just put it on and didn’t tell anyone, no one would ever be the wiser.

Re: 310 fork on a 1960 C172?

Here is my point: What benefit is going to a 6.00 x 6 tire on the nose going to be, realistically? You’re still going to be restricted to very small main wheel tires, unless, of course, you choose to just install bigger tires illegally on the mains as well.

Now, your IA who signs off the annuals is in a dilemma: sign it off, and risks his certificate, or says no…..go find another mechanic.

BUT, what have you gained by just upping that nose tire to a 6.00? Not much, if anything, frankly. You’re still going to drop it in most of the holes youd have dropped the stock tire in. And, now, with similar size tires on all three, you’ve upset the balance in attitude between nose and mains…..not a huge thing, but a thing.

Finally, that bigger nose fork is no stronger than stock. The weak point is the firewall attach.

So, I repeat: What’s the point? Looks or function?

I have that fork on my D model with a 700 nose and 800 mains. As others said a 600 wouldn’t be worth the time.

Are you sure your 182P is included in the serial number range for HD option?

I have a ‘71 182P and it’s serial number range is NOT included in HD option. It’s listed in parts manual but the HD option ended with the N model. Check your serial number. Airglass is only option unless you know god…..

I understand you were inquiring about a ‘60 172.
