Just because it's fun doesn't mean it's the smartest thing to do where this was done. It's my freedoms of flight I'm interested in keeping. I've left tracks and put my mark in places for fun, only started flying in '77 so I know I'm not as knowledgeable as most of the seasoned veterans.

If I see someone doing something that has potential to threaten my safety, or liberty in this case, I'm going to say something.

My first response was based solely on the flying aspect, not the location , political correctness etc. You have a point, based on those considerations. And that is why I live where I do, I'd get in trouble most other places.

Re: 33 mile tire cleaning session

That is why I enjoy this forum so much, a bunch of fun loving folks. I grew up every summer in the Tahoe area and every winter skiing, and love the place. I remember in the 60's float planes were much more popular both on Tahoe and Fallen Leaf Lake than now, and I miss the flying activity around the lake of the past. I hope your video goes viral and reminds all of us old guys with memories of Tahoe from the past. As to the negative comments from a few, I understand your position too, I wouldn't do it but watching the short video that was posted, it brought back some very fond memories of the Tahoe in the past that I remember as a child. Probably where I acquired my love of flying. Currently at Tahoe, just the once a year gathering of seaplanes brings out a lot of folks just to watch.

I think AKT 1 is keeping a very old time Tahoe tradition alive, and I salute him.

Re: 33 mile tire cleaning session

I'm going to go one more time.
Hi Sierra, Valdez, Texas Roundup, Oshkosh, Every Airshow, Reno, Red Bull, All of them unnesesary, burns lots of gas, hi risk, fun, and kick ass to watch, gets people involved, has a great following, maybe even get someone to go out and get some good experience to further there skill set.
There are so many action sports out there that are and do the same, some with more risk than others!
Some folks get killed doing them!! Yes they do, Some others die in bed, some others on the way to work! One thing is for sure, you WILL!
Some folks like to do, others like to watch, GoodonYa for doing either.
Some thing I never had the Kahona's to do, But sure do like watching those that have!
There are nay sayers for anything anybody wants to do!
Watched a video of a guy on a set of skateboard hit a deer @ 40 mph, WTF would anybody do that?? Because he can!! Proud of him! I sure as hell would never have taken the ride!!
I have a screwed Knee and Back, Can't do the race boats anymore, Can't do the downhill sking anymore. Fact is I can't even get on a dam Mule without a step ladder!
Some other things out there I never did, when I could, regret some, probably lucky I never did the others!!
Before anyone gets to carried away about permits and all, this is not Quinn's first rodeo! Assuming he did not have all the bases covered is a bit??
My $.02
Have fun.
Going to enjoy it when it comes out! =D>

Re: 33 mile tire cleaning session

I'll chime in too.

Nothing wrong here. Airplane speed not as fast as some boats.
Airplane not as loud as some boats, or semi trucks using exhaust brakes.
I know Kevin wasn't peeing in the water like a lot of water skiers, wake boarders, and kids by the beach.
It is a completely legal form of personal enjoyment.
I have a much bigger problem with bike riders, and I ride a bike on the street.
As far as environmental impact, I can think of lots of things going on around Tahoe that are way worse. The airplane is super low impact.

But never underestimate the stupidity of people in large numbers. I'm sure the no fun police are working over time on this.

Cheers...Rob

Re: 33 mile tire cleaning session

So were your tires nice and clean afterwards?

I'm assuming he knows there is a risk involved
It would suck if something went wrong for sure.... but after doing it for 33 miles straight, I guess it's safe to say he knows how to do it right?

Not to mention the right (or wrong) people see this stunt and work towards getting a new non Class G airspace designated over the lake. Then so much for others wanting to go sightseeing around the lake.

I suppose this is a possibility, and if so, it's the only real negative I see...because we don't need more rules/regulations etc. anyway, I'm sure they were all aware of the potential for personal injury/airplane damage etc.

But outside of that, it is pretty cool :D I'd like to see the video. Maybe having the chopper out there with a big camera will make people think they were filming something for a movie/show

I agree with all those points Rob. The issue I see isn't reality, but public perception. Using a national treasure beloved by millions as the proving ground for a form of aviation little understood by aviators, much less the public, strikes me as having the potential for a lot of blowback.

The doing of the thing doesn't bother me a bit. It's the idea that a video will get viewed a hundred-thousand times by Joe Sixpack and Jill Shoppingmall that strikes me as irresponsible. From Kevin's post that seems to be a goal of his. Aside from ego stroking, I can't see a single positive outcome of publicizing this event. Maybe I'm wrong. There's got to be a first time after all... (imagine funny emotocon)

As I mentioned in my post, for me as a long time visitor to the Tahoe area (1955~present) the video brought back fond memories of all the seaplane activities during my youth at the Lake. Now there is almost nothing and I miss that.

Re: 33 mile tire cleaning session

Most of the posts have merit but growing up with the Lake I agree with Deckofficer. There was a golden age of aviation on the Lake once upon a lime and I was fortunate to be involved near the last of it. There was a charted anchorage at Homewood and the west shore was alive with floats and anfibs. The Sea Plane Pilots Assn. held a splash in one summer and countless planes of all descriptions were there.
If Kevin had skied by then you could have heard the cheers all over the Lake. Taking my wife in the cub and meeting friends in a boat for a picnic was a fond memory for me.
Now talking to the few regulars on that water there are many concerns that we would never have guessed might come up. If he does not chime in, one BCP knows that a T & G might be reported as a crash or at least endangering the public. A beered up guy going 60 in a boat does not ?
Anyway for whatever reason I doubt that Kevin's feat will be successfully repeated by anyone else.
BTW I understand that the Mike Brown Memorial Splash In will be held again this May at Tahoe if all goes welI. I will post if I hear that it is happening.

Re: 33 mile tire cleaning session

If you went and did that in Australia, every pilot in the video would be counting the hours they had left on their certificate. We have places where you could do it, we have places where you might get away with it, but all it would take is one single video from any "Neville Nobody" passed on to the "authorities" and it would be all over red rover for your flying aspirations.

Good to see you have more sensible laws. While it's not for this little black duck, tis awesome to watch.

Re: 33 mile tire cleaning session

Count me in the "Like" camp, but I'm curious (if there's even a "real" answer)- given the size of the tires, and amount of flex in the landing gear, how much "too low" would he need to be before things went south? I'm guessing more than 12", maybe up to 24"?
