$4.85 av gas?

Just bought 700 gallons from the local fuel supplier for 4.85 a gallon delivered
They also throw in the 1000 gallon tank and pump for free.

Anyone else around buying this way? Is that a good deal?

Only a little cheaper than the airport but I like the convenience.

Just curious if others are negotiating a better deal. Well I'm sure some of you are just wondering how much better?

Re: $4.85 av gas?

Paid 5.20/gal for 1000 gallons 100LL delivered about 4 months ago. I'd take 4.85 with a smile!

Re: $4.85 av gas?

Quick update
The fuel arrived a couple hours ago
Only received 300 gallons as that's all they had.
I asked about getting more and they said they could at $7 a gallon
So go figure.

Anyway a few people have asked

Jim dible oil of grand junction is the supplier

I don't think av gas is really what they specialize in

If anyone has a supplier in the area They would recommend I'd be interested.

On another note if we had a few people in eastern Utah western Colorado that went together maybe we could get a load together.
Not sure how realistic that is but I'd be game

Re: $4.85 av gas?

Blu,
Just a question on the supplier who does not specialize in 100LL. I am new at the bulk delivered Avgas thing, but I thought Avgas was delivered in dedicated tankers so as not to contaminate the normal fuel supply channels with lead. This has always been touted by it's few suppliers as the reason that justifies the higher price of that fuel.

KLMO's Mogas I believe 89oct or less. Not approved for the Rotax.

I'm not sure, they do have a separate tank for it At there depo but they delivered it in a regular truck. It had 4 1000 gallon tanks so it could haul diesel and gas in different octanes.
I got the feeling they just emptied one of the tanks that normaly holds the high octane car gas and then filled it with the av gas for my delivery.

I say that because when I asked he said he had diesel and 85 octane on the truck as well.

Wish I was sticking around Moab area, I would pitch in and 'commute' for gas. $6.20 here in Moab but 5.92 for locals out of the truck or self serve. Leadville is under $5 I saw today on Foreflight when I was flying back from Crested Butte.

Re: $4.85 av gas?

We shop around and split tanker loads because we can't take a whole one. Delta and Paonia, I'm sure Ladd might too. Be very careful about paying for the load and then getting paid from another entity. Been there done that, went through the audit, not fun... Tanker to get a break on price... It is supposed to have a custody control procedure that follows the fuel all the way from manufacture to you... Never heard of getting a tank and pump for free? Did you sign a contract that you can't put other distributors fuel in their tank? On the hook? :P

Looking like something your stoner uncle built in the garage out of four Meccano sets, a fish tank, and an AMC Pacer, this helicopter seats a pilot plus two only, making it a tricky vehicle, logistics-wise, when your group has 8 people in it. We used to get 85 octane ethanol free, though with a new supplier Airwest now sells only 91 octane ethanol free.

Re: $4.85 av gas?

Did I read right that avgas in Alaska is now $11/gal?

Here's an informative little pamphlet http://flyunleaded.com/Aviation_Fuel_Update_6_2012.pdf

Came back through Kamloops (CYKA) a few weeks back and avgas was $2.25/l - $8.10/gallon, and that was paying in damn Canadian dollars at 1.03 to the US, not the dollarettes we were used to. Bought just enough to get me home. Avgas sales in Canada have dropped 18.6% from 2010 to 2011. Sales in the US are down 30% since 2005 and dropping a steady 4-5% per year.

I see some Shell stations have stickered their pumps that 87 "may" have 10% Ethanol, 89 "may" have 5% and their 91 has "0". The Union 76 pumps seem somewhat ethanol free. Surprised there is any ethanol at all this year what with the corn crop disaster.

Re: $4.85 av gas?

Heard that gas prices are on there way down. Stated reasons; US inventories and shale oil production is up. Wonder if that will ever influence 100ll . Man, I don't know how companies can afford to run the large radial engine transports at 11 a gal. They must have to charge a pretty penny to their customers.

Re: $4.85 av gas?

i dunno, but given the choice with only a 20-25% diff in the cost, i would sure run the 100LL to get better longterm results for my oldskool motor design. while i realize there are stc's for the cheaper stuff, have had way too many problems with our high-performance stuff with car gas of any kind...lots of the snowmobiles we build are 200HP +...and our stockers are all 150+...how much can a guy really save if your motor won't go TBO...!?

Re: $4.85 av gas?

I have had real good luck running 87 (and some 92) octane ethanol-free unleaded mogas in an O200, a C145, and now an O320. Right around 2300 hours or so total with no problems attributable to the fuel. No plug fouling from so-called "low lead" avgas either. You gotta remember that airplane engines aren't really "high performance" compared to souped-up cars motorcycles & snowmobiles-- the 150 hp O-320 in my airplane is only 7:1 compression, hotrodded to 160hp it's still only 8.5:1.
But different strokes for different folks- if you feel that you don't get satisfactory results with mogas, then by all means stick to 100LL.

So I worked out the figure on 1 of my birds, with a 985.
1600 hr TBO
20 gph
$4/$6
32,000 gallons gas x 4 = $128,000
32,000 gallons gas x 6 = $192,000 difference $64,000
overhaul $25,000
guess I'll run mogas when I can
another bird
12 gph, 2000 hrs
same formula $96,000/ $144,000 overhaul $30,000.
As said above different strokes for different folks.
I'm just CHEAP!!
