48 State Camping?

Happy New Year Everyone!!
Well I'm not sure this will be the summer or not, but Deb and I and our pack of Dogs plan on a camping trip either this summer or next in the Broussard. =D> (Great Camping Machine!!) We can bring the kitchen sink with us!! =D>

We will be hitting all the lower 48 states. Would like to here from all of you you're best camping spots in each state. :?:
We are going to try and do a blog on this as we go and see how much fun we can have and also see if we can find the best spot in each state!! #-o

Does not need to have any facilities and could include 5 star!!
Starting early so we can chart it out and also would like to meet as many of you characters as we can. O:)

Have just about enough camera's to mount on the Broussard to show us coming and going!!

Also any ideas on how to kinda show this to get the best bang would be great, any and all suggestions welcome!! :D

Re: 48 State Camping?

Three Lakes, WI (40D)

Beautiful area of the state. Well maintained grass strip. Camp under the wing or at the campground adjacent.

Hiking? Backpacking? Or just camping at the same place as the plane? There are other interesting options in WI if you don't need to sleep near the plane. Up near the border with the UP of Michigan is a park where you can hike in or rent canoes and paddle in to some nice secluded camping.

Re: 48 State Camping?

Schafer Meadows 8U2, West Fork Lodge 4U7, Ryan Field in western Montana, Red Lodge RED in south central, Fort Peck 37S in eastern, and some rough stuff in the Missouri Breaks Cow Creek CW0, Left Coulee LC0, Bullwhacker BW8, and Black Butte BBO. Sounds like a good time.

"Hiking? Backpacking?" Have you ever met M6RV6? :D

Fort Ebey and or Deception Pass on north Whidbey Island, or maybe my backyard IF Jake plays nicely with Raven.

No shit FF...

George, we got airport, wine rack and cooler, fridge full of beer, and a nice view of the mountains and golf course from the back patio.

Re: 48 State Camping?

Wow!! Sounds like a trip I'd like to do one of these years.

Having trucked in all 48 states over the years, I already have a few good ideas that I'll have to come back and list. This might be mainly my dream places to visit someday, but you might find of interest for your trip. (Not in any particular order)

1. I'm not sure of any grass strips or airport camping nearby. But the town of Elkhart Lake, WI is really neat to visit. It's a resort town and also the is a great road coarse race track down the road that holds some national race events. There are other smaller hotels and B&B in Elkhart Lake, but the Ostuff Resort and Siebkiens are the top two (and 5 star) resorts to stay at. The Paddock Club in Elkhart is one of the top restaurants I've been to across the nation. I've only been to Elkhart Lake for work, so I've never had time to explore the area. But, it's diffinetly and area I'd like to go back to explore. Lot's of cheese factories around and down the road is the Johnsonville Sausage factory (they might have tours??)

2. If you want to visit near NYC, Kobelt http://www.airnav.com/airport/N45 might be a great choice for camping if they allow it (I'm sure they do). It's only about a 1.5 hour drive to the city and many other key spots in that area. If this is of interest, G3 and I have some very good friends there that I'm sure would help you out in a heart beat.

I'll come back and edit with some more ideas

Hey Troy, slightly off topic, but wanted to let you know that I read your book recently and enjoyed it. :-)

Maybe M6RV6 will write up his adventure.

Re: 48 State Camping?

Kentucky;
(2I3) Rough River State park. Lodge with rooms, cabins, restaurant, golf, putt-putt, lake access, on site camping with a nice shower house.

(DVK) Danville. Cheap fuel, hangar and wrenches in my shop if you need a pit stop.

Indiana:
(64I) Lee Bottom. Private grass strip on Ohio River, but welcomes camping.

Georgia:
(GA2) Peachstate. Museum and restaurant on site, cheap fuel, on site camping, there may be a shower in the museum shop. Hit it on a weekend; there's a good collection of antique's that fly in for breakfast.

New York;
(NY94) Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome. Great museum, airshow's every Sat-Sun May through October. Clamping on site; ask the right person and sleep in the carriage house with a shower and A/C. Or stay at the B&B that is 20yds from the runway. Train station in town will take you straight into NYC.

Connecticut;
(11N) Candlelight Farms. Haven't been there in a while; grass strip with camping next to a pond.

Re: 48 State Camping?

Wow, Thanks Folks.
Just trying to get some ideas.
I'm not fluent in wordspeak as Troy and a few others on here, but am hoping to keep a blog maybe and something down everyday as we go!
Have no idea really where to start on something like that but I'm sure there are some on here who can advise on that or come up with some ideas, I'm all ears! ](*,)
As FF and GUMP understand, if I can't fly, roll or float there, We probably won't see it!!?? [-X
Sounds like some good ideas already, will be posting all of these on a USA Wall map I have in the Hangar, then will try and figure a route.
Would be great to hit Sun n Fun, OSH, and Reno! =D>

The adventure is underway!!

Re: 48 State Camping?

For California the two that immediately spring to mind are:

Gravelly Valley - http://www.airnav.com/airport/1Q5
Facilities near by

Columbia - http://www.airnav.com/airport/O22
Facilities on site. Nice walk into town for grub.

Give everyone notice and I bet the whole NorCal/Sierra gang would show up and camp with you.

Re: 48 State Camping?

For Virginia:
New Castle International (VA85). Beautiful grass strip in the mountains of Virginia near Roanoke. Home of the Blue Ridge Soaring Society (BRSS.org). Stop by and I will be happy to take you ridge flying!

For Colorado...
Marble and La Garita Creek Ranch are great camping spots. There's also a lot of great public airports with nearby or on-field camping & hotels. Check out all the options at:

http://www.flycolorado.org/

Looks like it will be a fun trip!

I hope he does! And glad you enjoyed the book. I enjoyed writing it. Trying to get some smaller trips organized into a coherent narrative for another volume...
