503 regulator

Sometimes the most fun way to get into the backcountry, Part 103 Ultralights and Light Sport Aircraft have their own considerations.

503 regulator

Can anyone suggest a good regulator for a 503, mines kicked the bucket and the manufacturer has closed down. Ive had suggested one from leading edge air foils. But have no experience with the unit myself

Re: 503 regulator

When my stock heavy duty regulator quit I replaced it with a Key West, about 100 hours now no problems.

Re: 503 regulator

when mine kicked the bucket on my 582, i replaced it with a Key West regulator... they are really nice and the voltage output is much more clean than the more simple rectifiers. It also is happy to be run with no battery and does not need a resistor put in with no battery ops.

Re: 503 regulator

Here is a third vote for the key west. I had to replace the stock rotax on 3 582's here and we all went with the KW. No problems in 600 hrs on mine.

Re: 503 regulator

what does your electrical system look like? I am assuming you have a battery otherwise this wouldn't be an issue. You could insert a master switch between the regulator and the battery, but feed the hour meter right off the regulator. that might be beneficial anyways, in the event of a regulator overvoltage you could cut it out of the picture (that's how mine died). or get/make a simple rectifier to feed the hour meter off the lighting coil.

The key West has simple wiring instructions. One diagram with a battery in the system and another diagram without a battery. Accessories can be powered directly from the positive + output post on the key West or from a Positive electrical Buss if you run a battery. Of course if you have a battery in the system you need a master solenoid to shut down power from the battery.

It does have a small amount of residual current that will run my hobbs for about a minute after I shut the master solenoid off. That had me scratching my head for a while. I also run my heated vest directly off the positive output on the key west.

Re: 503 regulator

Im thinking i might just put a diode on the battery side so it wont back feed into the hobs, then i wont have to change my wiring

Re: 503 regulator

If you dont already have one, get a tiny tach. Not only will you probly be surprised that the analog RPM is way off, it has a built in hour meter that will run whenever the plugs are firing.
