53' Cessna 180 Baggage Area

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

53' Cessna 180 Baggage Area

2 questions, and to start with, pardon my ignorance.

I have a question regarding my 53’ Cessna 180. In the end my question is: what is the definition of the “Baggage area”? I believe it to be the area just aft of the rear bench seat. There is a piece of sheet metal with a piano hinge installed about 2-feet aft of the rear seat that isolates the remainder of the fuselage to the rear. Just aft of this sheet metal door is an 18-gallon Javelin auxiliary fuel tank that extends upward 9 inches from the floor and creates a platform in this area. The flight supplement for the Javelin tank (Installed in 1964) gives limits for “baggage loading” with varying quantities of fuel in the aux tank. Can this area on top of the Javelin tank be used for baggage within the limits in the supplement, weights, and CG; or is an additional modification necessary to extend the baggage compartment to this area?

Second question, I have a Sigtronics SPA-400 intercom and a KMA-24 audio panel. Can you add a jack allowing the plug in of an IPOD or other music device to the audio system? I asked an avionics shop over the phone, but he was in a hurry and I think he blew me off.

Last bit, I apologize to those that may be stuck in airports around the country, but when Alaska Airlines stopped flying on the 21st, my flight to get to Seattle then Dallas and return to Iraq was cancelled. The next flight they could give me leaves Fairbanks at noon on the 25th. It will be a merry Christmas with my family and particularly with my 7-week old daughter after all. Happy holidays to everyone.

As a Christmas, I can tell you it was my worst. I hope your near the end of your tour. There are a bunch of has beens pulling and praying for you guy's. My son was nine weeks old as well.
I'm sorry, I have no idea about your 180, but my gut feeling is as long as your in C.G. you'll be fine.

Have lots of experence in all the above areas. Retired CW-4 (used to be 062b Now 100D -helicopter driver). I was in the first dirt(Bush 1) deployment Iraq war. When Cessna designed the 180-182 compartment
aft of back seat was plackard for 120 lbs. The area is commonly the same
area (baggage compartment ) that shares the real estate with Javlin fuel tank. The aft side of the 109 bulkhead (just forward of the battery box ) compartment was designed for 80 lbs. The aft mounted battery (M-35 )
takes up 35 lbs. from Station 109 to Station 140 used to hold the old
power supplies> tube type radios etc. N2915C is Jeff Fields 1954 C-180
with the Javelin fuel tank (removable0 and extended baggage. Write me at my email for questions or pictures. AIM HIGH Bill Reid

Any avionics shop can wire in a music in jack for your audio panel. Had that done myself with that same audio panel. The KMA-24 will also control the volume of the music in. Some audio panels don't.

First and foremost, my family and I thank you for your service and your family for their sacrifice. It is wonderful that you are able to spend Christmas with your family. Thank God for bad weather. :D

We have a C180 with extended baggage, no aux. fuel, though. the area where your tank is located is where my extended baggage area is. That area is limited by placard to 50#. I believe your line of thinking is correct.

Merry Christmas,
