74R, Horizon Airport, TX

Gotta make a run to Lackland AFB in Sept to watch a grandkid graduate from basic. Never been to San Antonio, and in looking at the map, this "seems" like a nice grass airport, and close to the base. Unless I can help it, for this trip I'm going to avoid big city airports of any kind.

Any local info is appreciated. Thanks.

Not sure I can help you with the airport thing. But make sure you make time to go to Rudy's Country Store and BBQ in Leon Springs (it's the original of the Rudy's BBQ and IMHO, the best BBQ in the country). It's right off of I-10 west of town (I think around exit 550).

Their "Moist Brisket" is like eating candy :P :P

You're welcome to stop by 2F0.

It is paved, but it's small town. We also have fuel at a decent price.

If you let me know when, can fix you a home cooked meal and some cold beer.

Re: 74R, Horizon Airport, TX

I base my plane out of 5C1 northwest of SA. I have flown into Horizon several times and the grass runways are in pretty good shape. The two things to be careful of are that that it's in a cutout for the class D at Stinson airport...keep your pattern tight. Second is it's right next to a shooting range...don't piss anyone off!

If you need the use of a vehicle and want to hangar your plane (and don't mind landing on nasty asphalt), you're welcome to fly into Boerne Stage. I have a newer standard shift jeep available, and also have a nice one bedroom apt in my hangar you're welcome to use. It's a longer drive to Lackland, but it's 5 min away from Rudy's BBQ in Leon Springs!

While i totaly appreciate avoiding the big city airports, i used to fly down to San Antonio frequently and tried a varity of airports, but finally stuck with Stinson KSSF. The FBO (San Antonio Aviation) folks were excellent, always ready to help (got excellent deal on hotels and rental cars), came in before/after hours without any question (and without any charge) that it just made life easier. And for class D, very low key operation, and no fees. Otherwise Tom's offer sounds good. =D>

Take a look at Castroville. KCVB - Cheapest gas around. Great friendly airport and airport manager. Courtesy car, only 8 miles straight down 1 road to Lackland. Did I mention cheapest gas in the area?

Re: 74R, Horizon Airport, TX

Are you sure Lackland won't let you land there? If you call ahead and ask permission to land to attend the ceremony, they might well give clearance....The class Charlie airspace and all the AFBs (3 different fields) around San Antonio is fairly friendly but very busy, with lots of high speed T-38 and T-37 training going on the north east side of the city and heavy AC at SA intl and Lackland. I recommend flight following even if you skirt the Charlie airspace.

Re: 74R, Horizon Airport, TX

Thanks for all the great info and offers guys. Exactly what I was looking for.

We're gonna wander down from the wilds of Nevada with a couple Arizona stops to visit friends/family, and then planning on TX the 12th or 13th. Now kinda leaning towards Castroville. I like the ONE ROAD plan for nosing into the city. But knowing me, I'll make a final decision when I'm two minutes out, looking out the window.

As for Lackland itself... Unless something's drastically changed from how it was at other joint use bases, they're not gonna let civilian wheels touch their runway or ramp without a huge PIA hassle.

Re: 74R, Horizon Airport, TX

Hi Gump,

I had most of a day to kill in San Antonio recently and asked a similar question to the 170 guys. As it turned out all I did was tour the museum at Stinson field (it was ok, cheap enough at $4 entry fee) but some of the guys offered up some other suggestions that you might be interested in.
