For the record, there is no such thing as a "Private" beach in Alaska, whether you call it an airstrip or not.

Indeed!

I'm pretty sure they were unloading the coolers as I sped by and snapped the pictures, but I'm not sure. I didn't stop to ask or check on anyone.

Re: A double oops in Chinitna Bay

Glad no one was hurt. Were they landing at the same time or the second plane thought it would be fine even with the first one sitting like that?

Re: A double oops in Chinitna Bay

My guess, which is pure speculation, is the first one nosed up on rollout and the second one did it while repositioning so he could leave with the first one in the way.

To be clear my comments were tongue in cheek, I was not there and know nothing other that what I read in the news article where I also swiped the pics from.

Could have happened with a taildragger but that is not the sort of place I'd land at with my Trigear Maule.

A man (or woman) had gotta know his limitations.

Re: A double oops in Chinitna Bay

Have a good friend who also landed on the beach that day in a 206 (Working) with no issues. Not sure what happened, but I'm sure he will fill me in at some point. If appropriate i will pass it along.

Re: A double oops in Chinitna Bay

The planes appear to below the high water line. The "private" beach, if it really is in private ownership wouldn't extend below that line. Soft sand + nose wheel + airplane taxi = big repair bill$ for someone. Too bad. Would conventional gear be at equal risk of an upset under these conditions?

Thats completely dependant on the tire size and aircraft weight. A supercub on 35" Bushwheels? No problem. A 185 on 6.00s.... Don't even think about it.

That is a hell of a photo!

I note they are both running pretty large tires on the MLG. It must have been pretty soft.

Looks like they were running 29" Air Hawks on the mains and 8.50x6 on the nose.

A double oops in Chinitna Bay

The beach in the photo looks so buffed. Would like to know what the feature is that actually got them. A 8.50 on the nose is pretty big.

Re: A double oops in Chinitna Bay

Just got the low down from a friend that also landed there that day. Accidents were unrelated. Soft sand and a hefty cross wind were the culprits. Sounds like the red & white 206 got into soft sand while taxiing and collapsed the nose gear while the other plane had issues landing in a pretty good cross wind.

Probably didn't have a flight plan. I hope they had helmets on. :D
