Keep the shiney side up and the dirty side down...

Re: A save for SPOT

Here is a more detailed story as reported in the Fairbanks News Miner. The guy transmitted a "Help" signal on his Spot, but got no help. So three hours later he pressed the "911" button on his Spot and the response was pretty immediate.

Re: A save for SPOT

Sounds like a classic "end of the roader", living (tresspassing) in other people's cabins, "working" other people's mines....and got poisoned and robbed. At a mine on Gold King Creek.

That IS a pretty long walk, actually. Sounds like this guy is from the same club as the guy who robbed a convenience store in FAI several years back. The clerk, when asked to identify the robber stated "yeah--he had the "F-Word" tattooed on his right cheek..... took the troopers about half an hour after that hit the networks to get a call to come get him....from Healy.

While I didn't see any redeeming values in this guy based on the the writeup in the Newsminer, you are always the one that cautions all of us not to speculate on what might have caused an airplane accident base strictly on what is reported in the news media. And while I suspect that you are right on in your assessment of this "end of the roader" (and we sure have our share of them up here), I was surprised to see you ignore your own council in this instance (but glad you did). And frankly, I don't think that there was any poison syrup involved.

NTL, it was good to see that Spot is working as it should.

Re: A save for SPOT

'Poison syrup' might equal "Demon rum'?......
And his 'right hand' might be the 'malicious villain'?

Just wondering aloud...er, on screen. :?:

Humor may not make the world go around, but it certainly cheers up the process... :)
With clothing, the opposite of NOMEX is polypro (polypropylene cloth and fleece).

Re: A save for SPOT

Eric,

I try to give pilots the benefit of the doubt. A pilot, by virtue of testing, training and check rides, has at least proven at some point that they have something on the ball. And, as Gump posted in another thread, ALL pilots may well be just one landing away from an accident/incident. And, SOMEtimes, those aren't the pilot's fault. :D

On the other hand, I've known quite a few end of the roaders, and SOME (actually very few) of them, I have the utmost respect for. They are folks who researched the laws/regulations, found a place to live legally, moved there and prospered. THAT is NOT easy, I know, and again, I have the utmost respect for them. One of those type couples who I know happens to live at Gold King, by the way....

Then there are the ones like the guy who died in a bus on the Stampede Trail....and was lionized by Krakauer. IF the troopers are correct, they noted that this guy has been living in other's cabins. That is trespass. I'm sure he doesn't own the mine operation on Gold King Creek, and yet he's "working" that mine???

Oh, well. I know I should be kinder and gentler. I'm sure this fellow is just a poor misguided soul, looking in all the wrong places for a good paying job.......

But I do love the story of the dim wit that had the "F-word" tattooed on his cheek, then turned to armed robbery. There's more to that story as well. He escaped from jail. Didn't take the Troopers long to catch him that time either.

So let me take one good guess...... The guy turned to armed robbery because nobody would hire him with the "F-word" tattooed on his cheek? #-o

I know this guy. Or rather have had the misfortune of dealing with him. MTV is spot on.

And he's lucky the troopers got to him before one of the wood river cabin owners did. He has no fans there - to put it mildly.

Yah, I know the type and frankly your and MTV's assessment exactly matched my perception of this guy based on what I read the article -- just couldn't help myself. I'm an incorrigible tease when it comes to people that I like and I just couldn't help sticking my finger in Mike's eye a little bit.

I've spent a little time Sheep hunting in the upper reaches of the Wood River, and can just picture this guy's activities. I helped developed the Anchorage/Fairbanks intertie in the early 1980s and we crossed a lot of open country and the occasional "food stamp pioneer" that could match this guy's description.
