I could tell you all some doozies...I see them quite frequently...will make your blood boil.
Remeber the Cory Lidle, Cirrus crash in NY a few years back? I was the underwriter on that one...simply put...pilot error...they tried to make a 180 degree VFR turn (with the wind) from the middle of the corridor...could not make the turn without a stall and hit the building.
Parties named in the various lawsuits: Avidyne, Garmin, Cirrus, TCM, the flight school, the instructors estate, and Cory Lidle's estate.
We just wrote a check for the policy limits...
Why so many named in the suit? Cory's contract with the Yankees stated that if he died while operating an aircraft his contract was void...no benefits paid to the family. His life insurance policy also had a pilot exclusion (this is fairly typical) that voids the policy in the event he died while operating the aircraft....his wife was left with nothing if it was proven he was operating.
Shotgun approach on the lawsuit...name enough companies and a little settlement from each adds up to a lot of money. It is cheaper for them to settle out of court than to pay to defend themselves and roll the dice with the courts.
Welcome to the litigious society as we know it...this stuff happens all the time.
"To most people, the sky is the limit. To a pilot, the sky is home."
