Adding fuel injection to o-470

Hello all, I have been searching the internet and have not come up with any info on this. Does anyone know if converting either a 182C or D to fuel injection is possible legally. I understand the Bendix style does not require a return line. I am interested in this for 2 reasons, first reduction of induction icing and being able to run lean of peak. I don’t know if it’s possible to do this with a field approval. Thanks in advance.

Search for STCs. There are approvals.

There's been a few discussion both here & on the SC site about this. Google it up.

Re: Adding fuel injection to o-470

I have a friend that is beginning to think ethanol in the fuel(E10) acts as deicer(when it comes to carburetor ice) . Wonder if there is any kind of experiment to prove that theory? It is a gimme when it comes to fuel line ice and works like Heet( in a car that is).

I know 10% ethanol in car fuel still gels up in the winter. Maybe E85 would be better?

Re: Adding fuel injection to o-470

A quick search shows these two STCs:

Airframe: http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guida ... 0injection

Engine: http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guida ... 0injection

Now, who owns or sells these exact STCs nowadays is the real search task. Are those STC holders still in business? If you find actual sources for them, report back. We'll update the knowledge base.

Re: Adding fuel injection to o-470

When I looked into this a few years ago I was unable to find an STC actually available for bendinx injection on a continental engine in a 182, I hope you have more luck.

There is continental injection available on a 182 thru the Peterson STC, the same guy who does the “Wren”. It was prohibitively expensive at the time.

The complexity of installing fuel injection on an airframe that wasn’t originally set up for it is what prompted Steve Knopp to develop the Pponk conversion.

Ethanol is NOT an approved additive in aircraft, for icing or otherwise. ETOH is specifically prohibited by the FAA.

There are at least two approved anti icing additives: Prist (bring $ and requires “injection” into fuel stream as you fuel), and ISO Propyl alcohol.

Isopropyl is more commonly used in a gas, though Prist is approved.

I use Iso Heet in the red cans from any auto supply outfit. The MSDS says it’s percent isopropyl meets FAA standards. I took that to a FSDO and they agreed.

Re: Adding fuel injection to o-470

I just went through this with the GO-480 on my Helio. Took me close one full year of dealing with the FAA to get it approved. However, they were friendly and helpful (in their own way) through the bulk of the process. I ended up doing a one-time STC for the engine and another one for installing the engine on the airframe.

I installed the RSA5 system in place of the PS5 Carb and so far it is a good system. Starting is injected Lycoming difficult, but the engine is POWERFUL. Who know how much of that is a fresh overhaul and how much is the fuel injection? I tell myself it is all fuel injection to make me feel like the effort was worth it.

Feel free to PM me and we can get into the weeds of the process, it isn't a short one or a particularly difficult one, but it is a serious process best done without trying to take a short cut.

Re: Adding fuel injection to o-470

The 182 I sold has a Bendix RSA5AD1 and I can see if I can dig up the paperwork. There was an engine builder in Wasilla I believe that was able to do both a PPONK and add the Bendix system on it. The name escapes me but he should be listed on Knopps site.
