Here is what my friends camera mount looks like on the wing - it's pretty simple:





It attaches to the existing screws for the landing light cover. There are some neoprene rubber bushings on each screw to limit vibration and protect the wing from the raw aluminum of the mount. There are also some non-skid pads from the aviation department at Home Ddepot where the camera mounts to keep the camera from twisting.

I really like that mounting idea near the landing light. I myself have been using the VIO-POV 1.0... They've just come out with an HD-version (i thought mine was HD when i bought it, but it wasn't.) What i liked about it, is the fact that it doesn't 'feel cheap'. Its got some weight to it, and doesn't feel like a toy , and it feels like it could take some abuse.. The remote is nice, and all the different little mounts they have are great. But i might be an impartial judge, because i spent so much money on it. Anyways.. not bad for a first post. Found this site, because i was looking for 'mods' to do to my Stinson 108-3 project (it's amateur built, so basically anything goes), hope to post more in the future. Mike

This is some nice footage! I am however wondering if a stiffer mounting plate would make the result even better, as there is still some wobbling in the video!?

That's the whole problem we're trying to solve. On our aircraft, we've decided that it's not the stiffness of the mount that matters so much (we've tried different mounts, some stiffer, some softer, some screwed directly to the airframe, some with isolating bushings, etc with only nominal difference), but the vibration from the engine at different speeds. See our sample video a few posts above showing video at different rpm's to get the smoothest video. We need to balance the prop again for sure.

Maybe something to try , do you have image stabilization on your camera most do i have a kodak sport i was getting a jello look in the video till turned off the E I S and went with 720 60fps clear and no jello look. you can see what i shot on you tube, type in rostraver and look for landing on 2 6 . also i have mounted it to the strut with a rubber tripod and duct tape,and a cord to the tiedown eye just in case. no problem at a 115 mph i dont think its the prop good luck

I have a mount I fab'd a few years ago that I will get some pictures of but was wondering if anyone has flown a hard drive based camera? The mount I made was to fly an old DV camera...which handled the plane vibrations fine...am somewhat concerned about flying the HDD camera as the hard drive has lots of tiny moving parts Any experience out there? (The camera wasn't bought with flying it in mind...silly me)

I tried a friends HD Canon a year or so ago, and it continually shut down - I think due to vibration according to the error message which related to a message you would get if you dropped it, and its subsequent shut down to protect the HD. It was simply mounted via a RAM ball inside the cockpit, and maybe it could have been rectified to work, but my plane is fairly smooth (Rotax 912S) and still had the issue. The owner had the same problem in his plane, also a Rans. If that helps with your question.

The go pro suction cups are good to 200 mph, they worked on the albatross float for multiple takeoffs from the water getting dunked real good a few times as well. They are solid

Vibration will definitely be the undoing to any magnetic hard drive. Just pop for the solid state memory (flash) GoPro/Drift/ATC9K style that can take a fair amount of abuse and save your nice HDD cam for other stuff.

Great thread. Lots of great information. I prefer the suction cup mount if the camera will not fly off and damage my plane. I think I would prefer a temporary mount. I wonder what kind of camera and mount is used on the "Flying Wild Alaska" planes.

Just realized the camera actually has a slot for a flash card...but don't know if you can cage the hd though. Probably just eBay the thing and get a go pro...
