Air Metal Fabricators

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Air Metal Fabricators

Air Metal Fabrications makes an extended baggage for 180's & 182's. I can't get them to answer up on the tely or email.
Anybody done business with them lately?

Re: Air Metal Fabricators

Just put in a Selkirk extended baggage. I got the fiberglass version and it took 2 hrs to install. Works good and less than Air Metal Fab.

Re: Air Metal Fabricators

I'd recommend the AMF kit. We just put one in my brother's '58 182 and it is 10 times the quality in my opinion. In fact, he bought the Selkirk kit first and was so disappointed by the quality, he opted not to use it and bought the AMF.

Tim is right though on the installation... It is not hard but will take more time than the Selkirk.

Re: Air Metal Fabricators

On my first 182B we used the Selkirk all aluminum that fit above the battery. Not sure it could be improved upon. Maybe AMF is a little more perfect in a few respects but I carried a lot of stuff in the Selkirk and what can go wrong.

The AMF is rated at 70 # and the Selkirk is rated at 50#. I only carried survival and tie down stuff with a couple of folding chairs. Never approached 50 so it might as well be advertised at 200.

Never heard of the AMF tell 30 minuts ago so it was not an option for my second 182B. This time I chose the less than $800 model Selkirk and will happily spend the saved money on other toys or gas.

I will not argue wheather the AMF is higher quallity but you reach a point of diminishing reterns.

Re: Air Metal Fabricators

This is it I like the compartments and the 80# capacity. Just cannot get a hold of them.

Air Metal Fabricators

They look to me to be a husband wife team. Folks go on vacation? (maybe a long lazy trip somewhere before ending up at Oshkosh?)

Re: Air Metal Fabricators

Tim,

I guess I should clarify that the Selkirk kit my brother bought is the fiberglass one... I haven't seen the metal kit they make but would probably be much nicer (and sturdier). The fiberglass kit was rather flimsy... we were not impressed.

BCP forum member 182STOL either manufactures or installs some sort of an extended baggage upgrade. It is likely to be a lower cost alternative. He is very familiar with the "field approval" process and has done several baggage compartments successfully.

I have the fiberglass extended baggage on my 59 182. It does in fact seem a bit flimsy but after loading the other style (like the AMF and other Selkirk) for many trips, I realize that I would never load a 80 pound tool box that far back in the plane where flimsy would be a problem. I would never load a 50 pound string of led back there either.

What I have always loaded is the light bulky stuff like folding chairs, pillows, and sleeping bags. Lots of that stuff is never taken out of the plane accept at camping spots. Also with the flimsy fiberglass model you have way more cubic inches of storage space. After having and using both, there is no sustitute for cubic inches.

With the way I load a plane, I can never imagine getting more than 50 pounds back there and I like the fact that the labor for installing is about 1/10th that of the old stle (non flimsy). Also it is half the price of the AMF and I will gladdly spend that extra cash of other toys. An HD video recorder is going to be part of that saved money spent.

Re: Air Metal Fabricators

I'm trying to figure out what options there are out there for an extended baggage compartment for our 205. I'm not finding much. Anyone know of anyone that has done these, STC or otherwise?

Thanks,
GSP

Re: Air Metal Fabricators

I can't comment on the extended baggage from AMF but I just replaced my lower rudder skins with AMF corrugated stock. They answered the phone when I called, shipped promptly, and included the paperwork. I was pretty satisfied.
