Airplane down at Spanish Springs (N86)

Got a phone call from the N86 guy. He was waiting at the fuel pump for a plane to land and get gas. The airplane attemped a go around off 16 and crashed into the second story of a house right off the departure end of 16 that is not finished so there was nobody inside. Both occupants of the airplane walked away. I drove out there but couldn't get close. The Sherriff told me they were from California.

Shit that can't be good for the airport/neighborhood relations. Isn't N86 already being encroached upon by the development?

I guess they were after that cheap fuel.

Edit: I watched the bit on the news at 11pm about this. It was GA's worst PR nightmare with the soundbites and interviews they showed. Stuff like "it's so dangerous having the airport that close" and "the airplanes fly over sometimes and now I really don't feel safe."

The airport has been there since 1970, long before the hungry developers set eyes on that area for their suburban sprawl plans. And yet nobody listens to reason.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Makes no sense to build houses right there. They were going to build four more houses in a cul-de-sac even closer to the departure end of 16 but our county commissioner got those stopped. Also, the homeowners wanted the airplanes to land on 16 and take off on 34. There is a hump in the middle of the runway so you can't see one end from the other. If that airplane (C-172) would have been landing on 34 and botched the go around, at least there is some options like open fields and the gravel pit. Zane, you're right, common sense does not apply. The airport has been there since 1970. The channel 4 news had an interview with a resident that moved in 8 months ago and discovered the airport "shortly before we closed on the house".
A King Air crashed into a building on Longley Lane a few years ago so lets close the Reno airport.
Keep in mind nobody was seriously hurt....

And I guess if we follow some of these homeowner's reasoning, we'd better close a few roads also.

At the risk of being negative, I get real pissed when I see these old geezers, that should of had their drivers licenses suspended years ago, show up at airport land use meetings, in their 6,000 lb. Cadillacs to bitch about my 2,000 lb airplane and it's potential to cause them harm...

You want to know how many storefronts we replace due to operator error at the local RX and Banks around town.

Bad Pilots take care of themselves and rarely take out an innocent victim. The same sure as heck can't be said for bad automobile drivers.

Ok, I feel better now... ;-)

I just got back from burning man. That plane was going to the burn - a passenger in the plane says both walked away with minor injuries, but no other details.

It was a great burn by the way. ;-)
