Airstrips near Zion NP.??

Thinking bout showing the low rider clan Zion Park in the next few weeks. Taking the 180 if the wx is good.I would just assume land inside the park and call it good but I'm pretty sure the forest circus would frown heavily on that.Looks like there is a strip a few miles east called clear creek? Or something . Any of you Utah folks have any hints on where to plant the plane and have at the Park for a few days? It's a full on wife and kids trip. Wondering if saint George is the only rental car option .... Any hints , ideas, sarcasm or dirt strips with a free car are much appreciated. :D

low rider,
There's an airport in Hurricane, 1L8, but I don't know of any car rental closer than St. George. Be aware that the inner canyon road is closed to private vehicles April thru October, so best to park in Springdale and take the shuttles for that area. Springdale might be a good base for the family because of easy access to the most popular spots.

You can still drive thru the park on Utah 9, and also into Kolob Canyons in the NW corner. Check out glidergeek's nice video of the Kolob area: viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9285&start=120#p128315

If you haven't found it yet, the Zion Park site is here: http://www.nps.gov/zion/index.htm

Angel's Landing is about as close as you can get to flying on a hike, but you'll have a great time anywhere in Zion.

The Clear Creek strip is unusable, or at least the last time I saw it it was. I was down there a few years ago and the strip had been ruined with berms running across it making it impossible to land any thing but a helicopter. I didn't get the chance to talk to anyone that owned it or that new much about it though. Unless someone has more current knowledge, I wouldn't count on landing there.

Hurricane is your airport and I believe Enterprise will deliver cars over there. My friend flys in there twice a year and he manages to get rental cars there. Its a nice airport with reasonable fuel and you'll be in Springdale in a half hour.

You should hit Bar 10 if you have the time, call ahead and they'll fix you lunch. The view from the rim is as cool as anything in Zion, excepting the Angels Landing hike #-o

Have fun!

Re: Airstrips near Zion NP.??

Thanks for the replies guys. Looks like we are going to hit Zion in the late fall instead of now.Yea Angels landing is pretty awesome. Back in my previous life we used to frequent the park on base jumping trips. Got a few jumps off the cliffs down near the entrance to narrows. What a beautiful place! We are going late fall cause I can't stand to see such awesome places packed with people,I like the park in late fall cause it seems like most of the people have gone back to their cages and the park is more open to move around freely. The fall colors are also incredible then. :D definitely one of my favorite places I have been.I can't wait to show the family.
