AK on the Brain... 170's in the Wrangles

Feb is here, which means there is some chatter about this years Airman's show... which got me revisiting old memories. Watching Zane's film of our 2014 trip really brings a smile. Worth watching again, and if you havent seen it....

I think my wife and I are finally going to make it to the airmans show this year! We'll likely just make a long weekend of it, any recommendations besides the show?

I'm really bummed that I will miss the show and associated parties this year. I hope everyone has a great time, and I will look forward to the 2018 show.

Lucky Wishbone for lunch, Over by Merrill field, Closed on Sundays if I remember correctly.
Pizza Plazza for dinner, great Italian food, full menu, great Greek salad and lasagna as well as other items. On Northern Lights blvd across from Sears in a strip mall.
I can not recommend Guinies for breakfast, quality has been going down hill as well as staff's attitudes.
The Mexican food across the street from Millennium hotel is very good.
Take a stroll thru Alaska Industrial Hardware store on Old Seward hwy, pretty darn cool store that are few and far between in the states.

Just a few off the top of my head.

I agree on the Lucky Wishbone... an overlooked gem that most tourists never see. I've been eating there for years.

If I never go back to Gwinnie's again it will be fine with me....

After watching the B side video again.... I had to come revisit this masterpiece.

A day or two in the Wrangells should be high on anyone's list who has that trip of a lifetime planned.......

Re: AK on the Brain... 170's in the Wrangles

I hadn't seen the video before--thanks! Great job, Z!

Many long years ago, there was a place called Alma's, if I remember right--it was a German oriented deli, with wonderful cabbage rolls. I don't recall exactly where it was--Wife 1 and I used to go there for lunch every so often--had to stretch my lunch hours a little to do it.

I know one of the places we frequented is gone now, Nikko Garden. That's where I learned to really like Asian food (except baby octopus, which seemed like eating one of those rubber things you stick on the shower wall to hold a bar of soap).

One of the best places was the Fort Richardson O Club on Fridays--all you could eat crab legs for $1.25. That would be $7 in today's dollars. Prices have probably gone up a tad now.

I never went to Chilkoot Charlie's--is that still there? We had too many airmen get in trouble there, and dodging the occasional flying lead wasn't my idea of a good way to spend an evening. One night one of our guys shot his girl friend and the innocent guy standing behind her--bullets went right through her into him. Both died. Rough place.

There were some really nice shops back then. One of my favorites was True Alaska Jewelry, which specialized in nuggeting just about everything with gold. It was out near Anchorage International, as I recall. I have a bolo tie that Wife 1 had made for me there, with 3 gold bears on it.

There was a gallery downtown that had a lot of neat paintings and prints and soapstone carvings. I have a gold pan painting I bought there, hanging just above my head on the wall here in our sunroom.

I have no doubt a whole lot of the places I remember are gone now--it's been 44 years in May since we moved away. But I'd love to go back and see that area again.
