Ak Penninsula trip

Ok guys and gals...... A week ago I set off on an adventure that I had been talking and dreaming about for a few years now. A little background on me: I live with my Wife and two boys in Wasilla, Alaska. I grew up flying with my Dad in his Cessna 180. I eventually bought my dream airplane. My Supercub! I fly 200-300 hrs a year between my cub and my Dads 180 (mostly my cub). Most of my time is local of coarse, (within 300 miles from home), but every once in a while I embark on a long cross country across this great state. I have flown all the way to Deadhorse, Galena, and now just short of Nelson Lagoon. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pictures.

Re: Ak Penninsula trip

Nice photos. That country is truly spectacular. If you go out there again, go all the way out to Cold Bay, refuel there, then do a circumnavigation of Unimak Island....that is truly Never Never Land out there!

Be careful flying around walrus.....if they bolt, and there are witnesses, you may get a serious visit from the feds......a good friend got caught on that once. Talked his way out of it, but it was pretty intense for a while.

The problem with walrus is they may not react at all once, twice or ten times, but the next time you just fly by, they may panic, and then it gets ugly....bulls stampede and trample cows/calves, etc. Mortality on one of those deals can be high, hence the sensitivity.

And, just to be picky  It's Becharof Lake....and a beautiful place it is... 8)

I worked out of Cold Bay for three years.....amazing country. Looks like you had REALLY good weather.

Re: Ak Penninsula trip

Thanks everyone...it was a great trip. I feel like I have only seen about 1% of everything down that direction. I would love to explore the Pacific side as well, although that will take a little better weather than we had on this trip. The weather overall was great, but we were on an edge of a system that was just to the south of us, so we had wind to deal with. The worst of it was landing at Ugashik for fuel. It was 30 gusting 35 and was a 90* crosswind......I think that maxes out my crosswind component. We fueled in Illiamna, and Ugashik. Ugashik was a great stop, and fuel was cheaper than it was in Illiamna. $7.75 gallon.

MTV, as far as the Walrus go, I never got too close, because of what you stated. The pic of them from the ground was using a zoom lens. We were very careful not to make any noise and stay along the bank to take the pictures. Sure neat being around them watching them come in from the sea. We camped about a mile down from them in a spot that is protected from the wind, and was also out of sight of them. I would love to do the Unimak Island trip sometime. certainly about as far that direction as I would be willing to go in my cub. :-)

Re: Ak Penninsula trip

Ron,

Yes, I realize you weren't close to the walrus....just posting for others' information. Not everyone knows about this stuff.

Camping close to walrus is fine as long as you're upwind :x Downwind, you almost can't far enough away from a haul out.....

It is truly spectacular country, and the closer you get to the end of the Peninsula, the wilder it gets.

You're right, though, windy it is. Cold Bay used to have the highest annual mean wind velocity of any occupied "city" on earth. Hard to refer to CDB as a "city", though.

Good trip report and some great photos. Thanks for bringing back a lot of great memories....except for that crosswind thing.... .
