Re: Alaska Bushwheels 10" wheels

Kelly, original poster, left his hangar door open so I stopped by to have a look at his shiny new AK Bushwheel 10" wheels with 29" tires. Nice, very very nice!

Notes: AKB 10" wheels are black anodized aluminum. The inside wheel half is large enough that it "fits over" most of the brake caliper, making for a cleaner installation aerodynamically speaking - - though this won't offset the extra drag caused by the larger wheels. The outboard half does not have any accomodation for mounting a wheel cover - - an oversight IMO. One could fabricate and mount nut plates for a wheel cover using adhesive, no problem, but AKB should address this. They might also consider making the wheel available in other anodized colors including clear (black anodize often fades).

For now, I'll stick with my original 6" wheels with 26" Goodyears on my Husky.

all the best,

I can't speak for the rag wings, but on like a 180 or 185, the 10" wheels and 8.50 tires aren't any slower than regular 8.50-6's. Can't speak to the 29X10's, I haven't tried those yet. As you mentioned, I think this has to do with streamlining the brake caliper. Put on the 29" Bushwheels that go on the 6" Cleveland, and you will pay about 8kts. in speed (not a big deal when you need them). This has been a fairly consistent number for me on 3 different Cessna's.

I lost 5mph over my 8.50. I could change to a smaller tire for long trips or fly more.
140mph for 10 hours= 1400miles
145mph for 10 hours= 1450miles
50 miles is like an extra 20 minutes.

And how long will it take you to swap out the tires big to little and back? Bet ya $20 that it is more than 20 min... #-o

ya and 20min flying is alot better than 20 minutes on your knees in the shop changing tires.

Re: Alaska Bushwheels 10" wheels

Sweet! That's what I'm talkin' about!
Then maybe we could do a "city" version of 35's. That is 35 inch tires with a 30 inch wheel. Real short sidewall distance. When I'm not using them on the 180 I can get an Impala!

Re: Alaska Bushwheels 10" wheels

I was thinkin' about puting our logo in the tread design. ya know that way it would leave our logo on the runway when you landed!!! 8)

Re: Alaska Bushwheels 10" wheels

youl have to make the A real heavy so it always lands first or else you will have a bunch of runways that say things like shwheelsAlaskanbu on them. :D

Re: Alaska Bushwheels 10" wheels

Bill, Great idea about leaving your logo on the tread. The New Orleans Jazz Fest sold high priced flip-flops with their logo in the tread and they sold a bunch of them.

But what ever you do, don't imprint the "N" number of the customer in the tread. I don't need "proof" of where I have been.

Re: Alaska Bushwheels 10" wheels

Some where I have a picture of some tires that were built for a Dodge Viper that had the snake and Viper carvesd into them..... I have been wanting to do it ever since.

I am pretty sure I have seen tires in "lowrider" magazine with a type of plant imprinted on them
