Alaska Instructors

Hello All!
New guy here, both to flying and the page. After spending 10 years as a mechanic, decided to get behind the stick.
Purchased a 7DC, but now I'm having trouble trying to find an instructor. The only flight school in Fairbanks is Proflite,
and they seem reluctant to let me and my buddy use our own aircraft, let alone straight refuse to train in taildraggers.
I've been hunting down private CFI's, but it seems they've all retired, passed on, or are nowhere to be found.

Also of note is that the aircraft is located in Big Lake, I'd happily drive down and do instruction there as well.

Any help?

-Josh

P.S. Sorry if this is posted incorrectly, I don't forum well.

Re: Alaska Instructors

Since you said you would be willing to drive down south, I would suggest you contact Don Lee in Talkeetna.

Tangowad, on this site, is good. I'm not sure if I spelled the callsign right, but good computer operators on here can find him.

Both of the above choices are excellent.

Sonny is one of the best and located at 4AK6. Between having real AK bush experience and being an A&P-I/A, he's a hard combination to beat.

Re: Alaska Instructors

Walt Warner...legend aircraft in Willow. I bought a Pacer in Arkansas. The seller...who now lives here in Platinum.... and I flew it to Anchorage. Another friend flew it to Willow. It took 19 days in November....-25 degrees most of the time....flew when visibility was decent to get my hours with Walt...in my airplane...and complete my check ride. $80 per hour...10.7 hours to solo...then the night and cross country...haven't totaled what I paid Walt.. was under $2500. Matt Schumacher might chime in...Walt was his instructor as well. Walt is super! Calm voice...talked me through my errors.. During spin training...prohibited in a Pacer...said we're not going to do a full spin..but you need to know how to recover. I couldn't get it to spin. Walt did...what was that noise? Oh it was me...screamed like a little girl.. Walt flys a few three or so aircraft. Did my last BFR in his Maule M7 with a fixed pitch 180 and 31" bushwheels...

Re: Alaska Instructors

If these suggested instructors aren't in the knowledge base instructor listing, please forward their info to me so it can be posted. Or, if you're a tailwheel/backcountry instructor and you'd like to be listed, same thing.

[email protected] or PM me.

Half a century spent proving “it is better to be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”

Re: Alaska Instructors

Acme Cub in Anchorage. Can't promise, but I'd guess he'd do instruction in your plane. Really good guy, good instruction, lots of bush flying experience.

Re: Alaska Instructors

Clay Cranor used to instruct in FAI. Don’t know if he’s still around. Ask around the Airport.

Vickie Domke runs Tamarack Air at south end of FAI East ramp. She also used to do a lot of tailwheel instructing. If she’s not instructing, she will know who is.

Walt used to own his own flight school, has been around for ever, and a very good pilot. I'm glad for what he taught me.

But remember, getting your ticket is just a license to learn. A good instructor will teach you good habits, and how to be safe, then the real learning begins.

I don’t know of a more generous person with their time and advice than Vickie. Been several years since I was there, but she guided me to Curtis Z#$@&*, Dick Burley, and Steve Green when I was training. I know Curtis isn’t up there anymore, but the other two were as of couple years ago.

Indeed, and she’s usually got a pot of coffee on and Pilots hanging around.....great place to meet fellow pilots.
