Alaska report from Naknek.

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Re: Alaska report from Naknek.

DavidD,

You must have flown past me to get to there. I am the first Super Cub on the right on Lake Clark after you exit the pass. I understand there is good pizza in Naknek ( is this true). Well I have not seen a good pizza in about a month ( mooses tooth) so any pizza might inspire a little flying time.

Answering before David gets a chance...the pizza in Naknek is very, very good.

To the gentleman asking about the penair maintenance staff...I actually don't know them very well though I have been here for many years now, so I can't be helpful on that question.

GT,

I'm often in Bethel, but, unfortunately, won't be there when you arrive. That's a pity - it would have been great to meet you. What took you to Marshall?

Hey 12 are you in Aniak?
It is just as easy to run up there as Bethel>'
Will be here until the end of the month, then headed up river to Nulato for a month.
Opening a project for another Supt. here then having to go clean up and finish mine from the last 2 years!!
Maybe Stevens village after that for the rest of the season??
Hope to catch up and say hello! Are you flying out of Aniak?

Re: Alaska report from Naknek.

Been a while since I have updated. This one has to be quick.

First employer was a crazy man, literally bat shit crazy. Fired me just days before I intended to quit. Others are surprised I made it almost a month with him, it was a record.

Flew back to Anchorage, stayed with an old friend, had some fun and some rest.

I was hired by a really good, very legit part 135 Bell 206 operator in King Salmon. I got to know the owner and his mechanic while I was working down the road in Naknek. This job fits me much better, and I think I fit in with helicopter guys pretty well. Less nonsense insanity, it is more of a get it done and do it perfect type place. Better pay too, but I have to find a place to stay. Might be a challenge, I have tonight to sort it out.

I am pretty sure I am not the one at fault for being fired from the first place. I have only been let go one other time I can remember in my life, and this guy usually has a 2 week turnover rate.
I will try to update again as time goes on.
Feels like I will never see my wife and dogs again. Hoping for a couple free days again in ANC so she can fly up and see what Alaska looks like, or at least what the inside of a hotel room looks like.
I would like to go home in September, but they will probably want me longer, and this may be the place I return to for a few seasons.

David.

DavidB,
I'm glad you found a good job and shelter in King Salmon. Fun place and many great memories there.
Shit, I might even come visit you. I'll bring Whiskey and buy you a burger at Eddie's Fireside.

AKGrouch,
I was once told by an AK resident, that once in Anchorage, travel thirty minutes in any direction, and you will be in Alaska :)
Sounds about right to me.
Aside from Lake Hood (and the many great folks working there), I could do without Anchorage.
Imagine direct flights, from the lower 48, to the Kenai Peninsula and somewhere in the Mat-Su bypassing the Anchorage experience.
Unfortunately if that were the case, they too would be turned in Mini-Anchorages.

I used to think all the planes at PANC/Z41/PALH were there to make it easy getting to the "Bush".
Truth is, they are probably there making it easy to get out of Anchorage :)

That's my rant.
Looking forward to getting back to "Alaska".

Re: Alaska report from Naknek.

Sounds Like David has a place!

Born and raiseed in Anchorage. Went to West High. Anchorage is sure not what it used to be. Gangs, shootings, and a whole lot of Katrina victims or Island folks there now (no disrspect to those but I think you get what I am saying here)

I always tell people: "the best thing about Anchorage is that it is close to Alaska".

I sure miss it. Still can't believe I let my wife make me turn down jobs there and come back to Colorado instead of going back home to AK. Hopefully one day I can convince her.

Re: Alaska report from Naknek.

Yep, found a deal in King Salmon. 900 bucks a month gets me a room, heat, TV and internet, washer and dryer with soap, a kitchen, a dog and two cats (I could live without the cats) and a crappy little Mazda truck (which is kind of fun since I never need to go more than 45)

AK Tahoe, when did you go to West? I went to West, and then Stellar, graduated from SAVE 2 in '87. Yes, I was one of those SAVE kids.

The weekend I spent in Anchorage was not all bad. I reconnected with an old friend, got some new shoes and a new backpack, and ate good food. If I lived out here, or when I come back next season, I will have my own aircraft with me. I actually like going to Anchorage, but in limited doses. Like when I am back in Chelan (pop 4000) and I love going to Seattle, for 2 days.

I meet the best people out here. Locals, travelers, business people. Just met a Mexican G4 crew who flew the jets owners in to see bears and the proposed copper mine site.

Good night.
