Howdy, anybody have a list of "unlisted" airstrips, or airstrips not recognized by the FAA, for Alaska, preferably with owner contact info?

Why you ask? I support National Science Foundation funded temporary seismic deployments deployments and am fortunate enough to be able to fly to some of the experiments. We occasionally support professors working attempting to study the geology/seismology in Alaska and I'd like to learn what the other options are regarding airstrips if I have an opportunity to get up there. I've seen references on line, on a 99's website for example, that there are over 3000 airstrips in Alaska - yet finding the list is not easy (the 99's chapter I contacted in Alaska did not know where number originated).

Get in contact with UOA Fairbanks, they had a fellow that flew on the Glaciers Research for years, had a bitchin Citabria on wheel ski's that was a real performer and had antennae sticking out of it every which way! Was at least 10 years ago when he had a brain aneurysm and ended his flying.
They might have a list of some spots to land.
The way of life up there is pretty different!! Usually if you can park it and get back off you can call it a strip and it is OK to do that!! I think even most of the Wilderness area's up there you can land in, the National Parks don't like private helicopters though??

Most folks in Alaska simply don't worry much about airstrips. If you're flying a bush capable airplane, in many cases, you find the nearest river gravel bar, ridge top, or cinder blow out and land. There are indeed many "airstrips" that have been pioneered in Alaska, but Alaskans, like many Lower 48'rs, aren't all that interested in sharing the locations of "their" strips, so finding a "database" is pretty unlikely.

Airstrips?? We don't need no stinking airstrips.....

Trying to find some one to share information on hidden air strips in Alaska is kind of tuff to do. Most people do not want to be responsible if some thing gos wrong. The Alaska supplement is a good resource for strips. The Delorme Atlas & Gazetteer ( Alaska ) is another good resource. The best way is to fly and find. Any gravel bar is a good strip providing on ones pilot skills. Hope this helps some.
