Albion Municipal airport??? Idaho

Looking at an online map and I found a reference to "Albion Municipal Airport" 1/2 mile south-east of Albion Idaho. I can't find anything on it in the FAA database, on Google earth I can see a 5000 ft. dirt strip parallel to Walton Lane between HI way 77 and marsh creek road, with an ancient caterpillar parked at the west end. Across Walton lane is a building surrounded by old vehicles, farm equipment, etc., and a white Cessna. Does anyone know if this is a "municipal airport" open to the public, or is it a private strip and the name is someone's idea of a joke, sort of like the "Greater Green River Intergalactic Spaceport" in Wyoming?

Dale: it's real, right close to "town" also. About a 10 minute walk to a great little cafe. I'm not sure if it's 5,000' though? Seems maybe more 3500', I never really pay attention as anything longer then a couple hundred is all I need. i think it was part gravel with some old asphalt, again, with 29" Airstreaks I don't really pay attention that much, but it's real and more then adequate for any GA aircraft.

If it's public use or public welcomed, may be a good idea to get listed on Shortfield.com

Is this the same "airport" where Cessna 205 had weeds growing up around it ? Seems it had been there when airport closed and old guy wanted to keep his airplane there near where he was .

Re: Albion Municipal airport??? Idaho

The airport used to be on the sectional and was open to the public. The land was owned by my friend and former boss. He's also the guy that taught me to fly. The Kelly's own the junkyard looking property across the road. They used to run a crop dusting operation and operated out of there. Then, some time ago, my friend sold the land to them. If I remember correctly, liability and/or some requirements to keep it open to the public persuaded him against keeping it. He then had it removed from the sectional. Don't quote me on that. It's been too long ago. Anyway, the original length made it a long runway, but you can see on Google Earth that what has been maintained is much shorter, but still long enough. My understanding is that it is privately owned by the Kellys. It's a bit of a walk into town, but there now is a gas station near the west end. The last time I drove by, there was a Cessna parked next to the old hanger. It was hard to tell if it has been recently used, but if they were careful, it looked like they might be able to taxi around all the junk and get to the runway.

At one point I had thought about putting a house on that west end and buy the strip from my friend. That's when I learned that he didn't own it anymore. I worked as a ranch hand during high school on all that land south of the strip. Lots of good memories. And only 7 miles from where I grew up.

Ends up the strip isn't as far out if town as I was remembering. Especially with what appears to be gate access on the northwest end that wasn't there years ago...at least that I knew of. I had planned to go check it out last Tuesday but ran out of time. Hopefully I can check it out soon.

Interestingly enough, Green River, WY got that name because it was selected as a spaceport site by Virgin Galactic. The plan is, once the program is up and running, build a long runway and retro futuristic spaceport terminal.

I hope VG gets past the road bumps as the whole program is super cool.
