Crap, why can't Redbird be located closer to me? Breaking in my new super eagle conversion in my 180 is awesome at $5.60 per gallon... the awesomeness factor would go up significantly at $1 per gallon.

Here's to taking the whole month of October off to explore Texas (at least in the vicinity of Redbird)... who's in?

Re: RULES for Oct 2013 $1 gallon avgas at KHYI

Can't say I'm surprised about this - damn - and I was going to fly every day in October.

Redbird Skyport Spells Out Rules for $1/Gallon Fuel Experiment

September 19, 2013 - Redbird Skyport has announced some new conditions on its experiment to sell avgas for $1 per gallon at its San Marcos, Texas, facility throughout the month of October.

The incredibly low cost fuel is an experiment by Redbird to measure the extent of fuel price on flying activity.

The $1 per gallon offer still stands, but Redbird Skyport will only fuel standard tanks on an airplane, not temporary or "ferry" tanks. The $1 fuel amount will be restricted to 200 gallons per airplane. Redbird also reserves the right to not sell the $1 fuel to operators that it believes are violating the spirit of the experiment.

Response to the experiment has been so overwhelming that Redbird Skyport management became concerned that their fuel storage capacity would be exhausted before new supplies could be delivered. Redbird also heard about plans by some high-volume operators to divert to San Marcos for the cheap fuel, and of other plans to add large temporary tank capacity to airplanes.

The $1 avgas will be available during Skyport's normal hours from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day during October. However, given the initial response, it is likely there will be significant delays in pumping fuel into the expected large number of airplanes. If you are in a hurry, Skyport encourages you to pre-register online, or by calling 512-878-6670.

Skyport will collect survey data from pilots to help understand how the price of fuel impacts flying activity, and how fuel costs figure into the overall cost of flying.

It's one thing to talk about it. It's another to get the fuel bill.

Well it couldn't last forever, and won't last as long as they planned. It's been so successful, selling more fuel in 10 days then they thought they would the entire month, that their fuel distributor can't supply them after Tuesday of next week.

I think the coolest thing I take away from all of this was seeing aviation like it was in it's golden days. General Aviation pilots and airplanes coming and going all day. Glad I was there to witness it. Those days are now gone forever.

Took the Stearman down today, and shortly after I parked some friends showed up next to me. After they fueled I had to hang on to the wing of the Stearman so it wouldn't weathervane into their prop wash - took this video while hanging on. It's not backcountry but hopefully no one is offended.

After they left I headed to the runway and while holding short a flight of three other planes landed, a P-40, P-51, and Corsair. Wish I could have videoed that.

I read their excuse to discontinue the promotion, but I still look at it as false advertising.
