Re: alvord desert for landing

I was over there a week or so ago and the desert was COMPLETELY water covered. With the amount of snow runoff coming down along with the amount of snow still on the mountain I highly suspect that the water level is even higher.

Pelican Point was fine a few weeks ago. Can't imagine it not being dry.

On the way up to BCP/Maule flyin I stopped at Owyhee and the lake was lapping the Hilton front deck but airstrip was good and dry.

Maybe not the ideal camping location. But, would Fields Station, Burns Junction, or Denio be of interest to you?

What about Reds Horse Ranch or 45 Ranch?

Re: alvord desert for landing

Camped at Owahee Last Wednesday night with my grandson Asher. Was kind of hot but the water was fine. If you taxi up to the Hilton, walk it first to locate the angle iron driven into the ground that sombody left for a tie down. Taxi over it and you could loose a tire. Take a big blue cheap tarp to put your tent on, lots of little stickers. Did I say that the swimming was great and nothing like a bath before retiring to bed

Landing strip is just fine.

Leave early in the morning when cool. I was loaded and the lake was getting pretty close before lift off.

Another option is to gas up along the way and camp at New Meadows in Idaho. Nice grass to camp on and a short walk to town for snacks.

Oh and also, Alvord is now a lake. I stopped at the private stip at Rome, Oregon http://www.airnav.com/airport/0OR6 There is a coffee shop and picnic area and I am sure they would let you camp. Berry pie was real good. Nice folks.

The Minam Lodge is open but the Reds Horse Ranch belongs to the Forest Service now. They don't maintain it very good. There is camping at both places. You can eat at the Minam Lodge.
