Re: Alvord n' stuff...

Gimp, GroundLooper, and Chosstronaut, thanks for the info! I can't wait it check it out. I saw the video of the takeoff from Fields. Where is the one for the landing? Can you send me a link? I didn't see it on your Vimeo site either.

Is the power line you referred to the one you can see on the takeoff video?

Thanks,
GSP

Milkshake and burger was a 10! Rumor has it that the state trooper will right you a $300 ticket for highway landing. The local Sheriff looks the other way.
Enjoy,

Thanks for the pirep on the strip. I think I'll stop at Fields on the way to JC this year. Sounds like the thing to do is land on the dirt strip, eat breakfast, then takeoff on the highway. Now even if the State trooper sees me takeoff on the highway.... Good luck pulling me over!

Re: Alvord n' stuff...

I had a run in with a rancher when I stopped by the Alvord on my way home from Caveman last year. It had nothing to do Fields Station, but I got a feel for the locals through this. The ladies in the store also stated that it is frowned upon to land on the Highway to get to the store.......the airstrip is right across the street from Fields station so its not a big deal to land there and walk over.

I see the draw to landing on the road, but the feeling I got was that it may not be the "right" thing to do and that it may not be as airplane friendly as it once was. Just my impression, nothing more.

Not disagreeing with you HR. If they want to encourage people to land on the strip instead of the highway, they should get it listed on the sectional. I didn't even know they had a strip until it was pointed out to me.

Yeah not trying to disagree with anyone, but in my experience in the past couple months with landing on the road there twice and driving in and talking to the owners of Fields Station is that they don't give a crap about landing on the road. Neither of them ever mentioned anything about a Sheriff or Trooper. When I was there by truck earlier this year, to try and feel the place out for flying and scope a couple of other landing sites, the guy at the store had nothing bad to say about pilots landing on the road and told me where they did it, and how some guys supposedly take off OVER those power lines.

I feel they'll gladly welcome any and everyone as they are not exactly rollin' in the ca$h out there... Stop in spend some money, get a burger, a milkshake and some fuel or a t-shirt... and I guess maybe fill your growler now too, and try and keep these guys alive. The owners noted that they closed the post office as it was too expensive too run, but where happy to install a few taps as well now its the beer that brings in the $$$$ a true sign of the times... We loose Fields Station... well then what the hell do we have?

Re: Alvord n' stuff...

I've never heard anything but positive from the locals when flying into Fields Station. They welcome the novelty, and like, and need, the money. The same holds true for the parts of rural Nevada I wander now. No one cares.

Now state troopers who are city kids stuck out in the boonies.... Don't always think like local ranchers, farmers, miners, etc. Gotta be cautious unless you know and educate them (rides off duty with some off-airport cool stuff go a long ways).

And, if ya do get caught, that $300 fine isn't too bad if you figure all the times you didn't get caught.

Sweet! Thanks. Somehow I missed it.

Is the strip that road that runs east/west just north of the green roofed buildings...just SE of Fields Station?

Re: Alvord n' stuff...

I think next trip up I'm gonna plant this sign just north of town on the highway. Then if a trooper wants to mess with me, I'll just point! 8)

Yeah I'll work on petitioning ODOT to have a couple of these put up in some key locations...

Let's slap a very official-looking ODOT sticker with some made-up statute on the bottom corner.

No worries, I think Fields it is a great spot with excellent food etc. I just wanted to share my experience so people can be aware, thats all. The locals were very nice, and loaned me yard tools to go rake the airplane tracks  off of the farmer/ranchers land I had unknowingly landed in.........

Its a beautiful place to go camp and play, hundreds of places to land. I spend about an hour just above idle in the Pacer getting ridge lift off of some of the small hills around Alvord dry lake.

Take good tie downs, as the wind can pick up......so I have heard.
