Another 182 Thread

I've taken a similar route to Cryzivan. Two years ago I started watching the 180 market, knowing that was the plane for me. I had my Cub, now it was time to get the traveling machine. Looking at them more, I decided a 180 is too big, let's look at 170's, Pacers, Stinsons.... Man those straight tail 182's kinda look cool, too bad they're too big! Then it was back to 180's, decided I'd pony up and buy $65k-80k when the right one appeared, yet it seemed like many in that price range were really a $45k plane with the sex appeal markup the 180 brings. Maybe the 180 isn't right, and really is too big for my needs anyway, so I'll focus on the smaller planes.

Hypocrisy, thy name is CenterHillAg.

A couple months ago after cancelling a short trip to check out a 180 that was more project than plane, my Dad asked me to fly with him and help him through some landings with his new 170. Headed towards KOCH Nacogdoches cause it sounded quiet on CTAF, turned out it was quiet cause a freaking airshow was going on! After making sure we didn't bust a TFR, we went ahead and landed to see the warbirds. A guy comes over to check out the 170, and mentions in passing that his buddy was thinking about selling his '56 182. Sounds cool, but I'm a little soured by my recent cancelled trip, and was leaning towards smaller planes, but I'll look cause this guy is really excited to show us. We go check it out, and here's this nice, well-maintained, bare boned, old straight tail owned by an 84 y/o man that has lived 10x the life I'll ever lead. After crawling all over it and listening to Mr. Davis tell stories for a couple hours, we agree on a fair price, contingent on a prebuy. After a thorough prebuy by Mark Whitfield in Crockett (I highly recommend if you find yourself in East Tx), I picked the plane up in early May.

Back home in Wharton the day I picked it up. My wife thought it looked a little homely, nothing a little polishing and paint can't fix:
Image

I stripped the spinner and a buddy repainted it, the white didn't match and it had at least 5 layers of paint on it. Bought some hubcaps to paint as well.
Image

20 hours of washing, clay bar, polishing compound, and waxing later, the oxidation is gone and the paint even has a little shine to it. The silver spinner and hubcaps give it a proper airplane look.
Image

Shot of the panel, climbed to 9,500 ft that day. 1,000 ft is pretty well my max altitude in the Cub, so this type of flying is still new to me. It's nice though!
Image

I've only got 300 hrs, and 90% of that is in my Cub, so I was a little nervous on how I'd handle this big of a plane. Needless to say, the love of these early models is there for a reason, they're just great flyers! I'm blown away by how light the controls are, how stable it is at slow speeds, and how short it can take off and land. Plus, after 20 hrs of flying the testosterone sapping land-o-matic tricycle gear, I still feel confident using the men's room! Awesome! I'm comfortable taking off and landing in less than 1,000 feet at the airport, but haven't gotten to try it off-airport yet on account of our rainy summer.

All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase. It's a great plane my growing family will be in for years to come. I probably won't be doing much to it, just fly the crap out of it for the next few years learning it's traits. I'll consider the Airglas fork w/ bigger tires at some point, and a Sportsman as well. Right now it just needs to be flown!

Very nice. It's funny how those things work out sometimes. Looks like a very capable airplane. Congratulations.

Looks great! If I had a family of 4 a '56 C182 would be at the top of my list.

Re: Another 182 Thread

182's are fantastic airplanes, I have been saying that for years. Too many people "po po" them because they don't have a tail wheel. If you NEED a tail wheel then get one, if you don't then consider 182, 205,206. I have owned 2 185's and a 180, they are great airplanes but you pay a premium for them. My next "utility" airplane will be a 182 or 206.

Re: Another 182 Thread

While I truly love my P172D and will not likely ever have another airplane, if I were to change my mind, a 182 would be highest on the list. I owned in partnership a 70 182 and a 78 TR182, and I instructed in a 57 182 and several newer 182s. All were great airplanes for their purpose. A 182 is probably the best compromise airplane out there: fast enough, hauls a good load, stable, relatively economical, solid, good range, easy to fly--all the attributes of a good airplane.

Congrats! Glad to finally see her. She looks great, and I'm sure you won't regret your decision.

It really makes a guy feel good to have a solid, well rounded airplane, even if it doesn't have a tailwheel. I am so happy with my choice. And I am really happy to have some cash leftover....

I agree, especially on the money part. I was putting serious thought into selling my Cub once I bought a 180, I just didn't like the idea of having that much money tied up in a hobby. But as is, I've got less money in the two combined than I would in a good 180. Plus I just had the engine overhauled last year after finding a crack in the crankcase, and the power from the C85 stroker is way too much fun to get rid of!

Great find and great airplane!!! These things are the best bang for the buck, hands down. And one can find one at a modest price and start flying:

Dude 62L! I was just headed to the bank then to UT to pick that thing up. Now everybody knows about it. Oh well, I'd never get the BH done if I had something to fly.

Deal! Haha[emoji41] I was trying to get my dad to go down and look at it but there has to be something wrong with it for that price.

Very nice. An old tall gear '56 182 is one of my favorites. My dad owned one from '61 to '74.

17k for a running 182? That seems like a steal. Probably has issues, but it sold.
