Any Advice on Choosing Music for Making a BCP Video ?

I am fiddling with the idea of making a few videos here for BCP. I have been thinking about what kinds of music to add. It seems the right music can add the right touch. Likewise, choosing poorly can create a disaster.

We all have different tastes in music. Anyone care to offer some general guidelines ?…. Any comments from the pro videographers and production experts here ?

In the videos below, I have sort of chosen examples of the Good the Bad and the Ugly. Oh yeah, in reverse order I might add.

I recommend "Wet Dreamz" by J. Cole.

Chinga Chavin has some worthy toe-tapping music to fly by too.

You can't go wrong with Slim Whitman or Nickleback.

Music in plane videos for pilots often ruins the experience. Check the cub video above, It's being used there tastefully as backgound to set the mood. I think what ever music is chosen, your pilot audience should be able to hear the the aircraft most of the time, Music should be used to enhance a video, not take it over. Cause I think most pilots agree, there's no better music than an engine throbbing away twist'in a prop.

Video really isn't my medium, but as a generality I think people tend to pick music that's far too dramatic. Trying to add drama to what is really just recreation for the fortunate completely flops with me. The Battle of Britain was dramatic...landing at Mile High is just leisure taken to a high level of competency.

A quirky song that has nothing to do with flying and which never played over the radio does a lot more for me than some variation of Danger Zone.

In the end, if you need the music to enliven the video, continue editing!

Well...

I see the bar has now been set fairly high for the music in future videos which will be posted here. I can hardly wait for 2017.

You could always go with a classic ... "Comfortably Numb" by Pink Floyd

I'd much rather hear a narrative describing the events of the day.

Here is a good use of music as seasoning instead of the main dish.

Re: Any Advice on Choosing Music for Making a BCP Video ?

When I originally posted this I was thinking not just what particular music pieces/tracks, but some general guidelines as well to consider. I think certain niche music such as Italian Opera or Korean Rapper music would not be the greatest choices.

The XCub videos always struck me as being ever so tastefully done. I think they set the standard for some of the other manufacturers such as RANS and Zenith to emulate. They are just so soothing and fun to watch.

I tend to prefer accompanying music that is instrumental only. Song music, if used, should be softer and low key so the sound does not distract the viewer from the plane and the flying. BCP videos generally have a different character and personality than a movie like Top Gun. The music in most cases should likewise differ as well. The Pink Floyd recommendation is spot on. On the other hand, Lynyrd Skynyrd or Tiny Tim accompanying a video might be a bit tough on my ears. Of course...there is always the mute control.

Mis dos centavos.

The bad orchestra from 2001 brought back way too many memories of my junior and senior high school orchestra days... :(

First, don't use any elementary or middle school band recordings like the first two posted. After that, any video sounds good.

That aside, I prefer music over the engine drone for in flight footage, and engine sound over music for fly-by clips.
