GRANGEVILLE, ID - For the third time this year, an Idaho Army National Guard helicopter outfitted with a hoist has provided lifesaving support to accident victims. Yesterday, an Idaho Army National Guard UH-60 “Black Hawk” helicopter was called in to a plane crash scene in Idaho County. According to a National Guard news release, at about 1:30 p.m., a Cessna 182 single-engine plane crashed in a heavily forested area in the vicinity of War Eagle Mountain in southern Idaho County (vicinity of Burgdorf and Warren).
From Idaho Army National Guard:
The two male crash survivors were able to make initial contact for medical support. A Life Flight helicopter crew that first arrived at the scene determined it could not land; a helicopter with a hoist would be needed to drop the hoist down through 100-foot trees in order to access the survivors. The call for the Black Hawk helicopter was initiated by Idaho State Communications, in coordination with
the Life Flight helicopter and a ground crew on the scene from the McCall Fire Department.
At 4:59 p.m., the Black Hawk departed Gowen Field with a 4-man crew. The crew quickly made contact with State Comm and the McCall Firefighters at the scene. The helicopter crew was therefore able to rapidly determine the exact crash scene location. McCall Firefighters had already stabilized the survivors and prepared them for hoisting into the Black Hawk. The helicopter crew hoisted up the survivors and transported them to Warren U.S. Forest Service airstrip within 15 minutes; Life Flight then provided further airlift.
