Anybody know about the Wag-Aero Sportsman 2+2

In my search for a hopefully affordable, good performing, backcountry performer, this plane has caught my eye. Anyone have one, have experience in one, know somebody with one? Are they pretty tough/durable? Seem to be fairly light, some around 1100 lbs. I have seen them powered with cont O-320's,Lyc. and Cont O-360's and 220 Franklins. Some without flaps, but 'with flaps has to be better. Some wood spars, some alum???? Speeds seem to be in the 115-120 mph. range. I wouls hope for very good slow flight characteristics. Carry a pretty good load. Experimental. Take out the backseat and have enough room for camping gear.

Know of anyone wanting to sell one?? (I would prefer this info PM'd)

Thanks Gary

The Cubby is a J3 or PA11 knockoff, the Sportsman 2+2 is a PA-14 Family Cruiser knockoff. Different animals.

My understanding is that the PA14 is very similar to PA18, just wider/little heavier???

It's often referred to as a 4-place Supercub, but there may be other differences - for example, the PA12 uses a different AOI for the wing than does the PA18, the 14 may also. Some research amongst the supercub guys & with Wagaero should fill you in.

Pretty much a 4 seat cub, 2 sticks in the front. I always thought it was a cool plane. Good luck finding one Gary.

Don't know that that is what i want or could afford one if I did want it. Just trying to learn about different planes to see what would be best for what I can afford and want to do.

I know of an extremely nice Clipper (PA-16) with a 150 Lycoming. Fully restored with new everything. $50K would take it in a minute.

That plane should be awesome. But nothin there for me.
Thanks, but not itnterested in a clipper.
Made an offer on a 180hp Super cub yesterday, but we are a ways apart and it will most likely stay that way. :(
Have also been talking with a fella with a s7 that would be affordable for me. Just kinda watchin for the first best deal. I am ready to fly. I been ground bound too long.

This may be one of the few side-by-side airplanes that is actually as narrow as mine. IMHO it's more like a 1.5+1.5.

Re: Anybody know about the Wag-Aero Sportsman 2+2

I think of it as a 1.5 with a good baggage area. One guy I talked to that had one had seats that would adjust so you could stagger them for more room(Maybe they all have that option???). I'm OK with that, Actually did that in my 180 most of the time.

Re: Anybody know about the Wag-Aero Sportsman 2+2

Had the privilege to take a ride in a Piper PA-14 in Anchorage (lunch run to Talkeetna) a couple of years ago. How they can even half-seriously call that a four place airplane is beyond me entirely. Maybe being flown by two anorexic Vietnamese teenagers in the front and their dwarf infant children in the back. We had to sit staggered, with my shoulder behind his. Made the Taylorcraft look like a NAvion!

Seemed like a great airplane, and probably has more room in it than a PA-18, but honestly just not big enough to justify two side by side.

Tims 2 plus 2 performs very well. He has it on bushwheels . It cruises well and he goes into some tight places. I believe he has an 0320.

Re: Anybody know about the Wag-Aero Sportsman 2+2

The 2+2 was my dream plane for a long time...till I sat in one. My 6'8 frame was a no go, and would require a lot of mods to make practical. For folks closer to the average size, it wold make a great plane. The plans are good quality...and use a ton of off-the-shelf assemblies if desired. But it sounds like you are not looking to go that route.

For some reason, I can easily strap on a PA-18, but had to choose one of either sitting comfortably, breathing, or having stick travel at any particular time.

I did talk Tim today and he was very insightful. I am very interested in that model of plane. He is checking on one for me. That's a good point about size. Better sit in one before I start making offers. I'm 6' and 215lbs. Not sure how that will fit. Does fine in the SC.

Gary, 6' and 215lbs will fit in the front of a 2+2 just fine, the other front seater should be a little guy though. I'll call you in the next couple of days with info on the 2+2 I told you about.

Re: Anybody know about the Wag-Aero Sportsman 2+2

I have never flown a 2+2 but im somewhat of an expert on PA 14s now, they are basically a pa 12 with an other front seat jamed in. the only downfall I can see, becides the lack of elbow room as others have pointed out,is the 2+2 has no jackscrew only a trim tab. the PA14 even with 18 tailfeathers, VGs and the short engine mount still runs out of elevator on landing. I can only emagine the 2+2 is even worse.
