Anyone fitted a Landes fork to a C182?

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Any idea what struts came on what skyhawks? or will i have to do my homework and figure it out?

Thanks
Tom

And in that pic, 8.50's all the way around? How come you want to put a 7.00 on the nose?

It brings the nose more into alignment with the mains. Less chance of hitting nosewheel first. Another option is to try to get approval for larger mains. There's a picture floating around somewhere with a skyhawk or skylane with bushwheels on the mains. Try doing a search for Landes on this site. You'll pull up a few threads on the subject.

I hadn't heard of the shorter strut. Is that a 182 only option?

Re: Anyone fitted a Landes fork to a C182?

I installed the Landes nose fork on my '56 182 two years ago. I kept the same wheels and brakes, but upgraded the tires to 6.00 x 8.00's. I now have two field approvals to change my gear legs to the '57 version (thicker, shorter and wider) and to install 8.50's on the mains while keeping an 8.00 on the nose (currently not permitted under the Landes STC). One condition imposed by the FAA for the field approval is that I change to HD steel axles. No problem since I was going to do it anyway. No requirement that I also change to double puck brakes, so I'll wait and see how things work out with the single pucks. Overall, the Landes nose fork has been a great mod and the FAA seems pretty reasonable about letting us vary from the STC.

I installed the Landes nose fork on my 182 about 2 years ago also. Have 850's all around and single puck brakes. Single puck works just fine with me. I have no issues stopping in a very short distance.

Glad to hear you didn't have to upgrade the brakes. What did the 8.50's do to your climb and cruise? Thanks.

I'm based on a grass field in the UK which gets a bit soft from time to time. I'm considering a Landes fork and bigger wheels/tyres but I have a few questions re brakes etc. Has anyone here done the conversion? If so what else did you have to buy apart from the $2k ish kit from Airglass and how much extra did you have to pay (Wheels? Axles for the mains? Calipers?)

Many thanks in advance

Ian

I have a Cessna 400 seriers nose fork on nose with 6x6 wheel and tire. Have 700x6 mains with Cleveland double puck brakes . The nose Barrel was NOT CUT and remains the same length as the stock unit.Works good and cost a hell of a lot less than the Landes STC. -Less drag (goes faster) than the 8.50x6 hundred.

For my plane, I don't notice much difference or decrease in climb performance.

As far as cruise goes......I can't really tell you. When I bought my 182, I bought it to learn to fly and it had the stock size tire up front and 800's on the main's. I put the Landes kit on my plane within about 6 months of ownership (at my first annual). I also didn't do too many long cross country flights with the plane during my training period. If I did fly anywhere, it was low and slow through the mountains and canyons.

I can tell you now that I can cruise about 120-125mph no problem. Get a nice tailwind, I've been up to 150mph :D . But, I'm a low and slow guy, so I usually stay around 80-110mph (except for hot days).

The other thing.......the heavier tires kills a little on extra weight you can load in the plane (legally). But 99% of the time, it's just me, my big @$$, and my gear in the plane  .

Pat;
Is this>>> "I can tell you now that I can cruise about 120-125mph no problem. Get a nice tailwind, I've been up to 150mph :D . But, I'm a low and slow guy, so I usually stay around 80-110mph (except for hot days)" Indicated or TRUE ?
I usually see 130-140 mph indicated with TRUE of 150-160 around 7-10 k .Ground speed depends on wind . I use 2300/21 inches at around 10-11 gallons per hour takeoff to fuel stop. I time and measure my fuel and it pretty constituent . Headed for Austin week from tomorrow. If it's got fuel Wells has cheapest
fuel up that way other than J.D. fuel truck.

Yep.....now that I think about it, I screwed up

I usually stay around 80-110mph (except for hot days) INDICATED. When I'm in that range, I usually have two notches flaps out. So I'm watching my airspeed indicator (making sure I don't go much over 100mph).

When cruising, I'm usually watching mostly my GPS which is ground speed.
