I say go for it! You have more power than i do in my M20C so if its a strip I can easily make it into then you shouldn't have a problem. But i'll tell you the shortest grass strip i've done in the Mooney was about 900ft and I felt that was short enough for me! Just like others have said, just go practice your short field skills! Cmon Ernie, JC and Smiley aren't typical back country strips.. I mean how easy and soft can you get... both are over a mile long and over 150 feet wide with weekly mowed grass....might as well be a putting green...

I would really like the big opening door of the Maule. I do pay less for insurance, currently $1250 on a $75K hull.

I think he was just joking, not asking a serious question. Since everyone says "just get a Maule" whenever someone asks about a different type of plane.

I did... not a big change though... went from Tripacer to Maule... Wheel in back and more HP>..bigger door and on both sides too. carries more shit too... can repair it with duct tape and fly home... what a deal...

I think the bottom llne here is(for a backcountry plane), if you like it, and it does want, then it is the perfect back country plane, for you.

My old man wont fly his A36 into my backyard strip.

if your bonanza lands below 45 MPH then it will make it in the "backcountry" category!

My dad sold his STOL airplanes to me and bought an A36 to get around in. He got tired of having me pick him up at the airport with my 206 and flying him the few miles into my Ranch. Grass, 1400ft fence to fence, 35ft powerlines on the south end, and 20ft slope starting at the half way point to the North. No big deal for the Cessnas, Twin Otter, Cubs and Champs but a retract 6 seat cruiser? He put on a VG kit last week and put a bunch of cycles on it. He flew from Vegas today and made a perfect landing at my ranch look easy. Had to add power to make the highspeed turnoff. Beech made a very nice wing. I have flown quite a few of the older models and I have a lot of time in the A90s from short unimproved strips and even the B200s on (long) dry lake beds. That wing made them easy to land.
