Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

AOTF: Aircraft Mods: Micro Vortex Generators

With Allen's permission, I'm posting a cool video they made of installing my VGs at the end of December. In case you all hadn't seen it on their site, I thought I'd get it posted here too. They did a great job editing the day's work. Thanks again Allen and Stan!

That was cool! I'm not planning on putting VG's on any time soon but if I was this would be very helpful. It makes such a big difference to be able to see a project before you try it. I wish I had some videos like that for different things during the Clipper project! Well done.

The kit is very well put together, and fairly simple to install. Just installed on the 170A with great results.

It all looks good, "from a distance".

Re: AOTF: Aircraft Mods: Micro Vortex Generators

I have installed a lot of VG kits over the years... Lots of Pipers, a couple 170's and even a RV-6 and Kitfox... One thing I have found out is that if you lay out all the patterns by the book you will have a lot of clean up to do after the VG's are glued on... I have found that if I start out laying out 3 patterns, glue the VG's in those patterns, lay out the next two patterns then immediately remove the first two I significantly reduce clean up time to almost none needed. I also due one major surface before starting on the next (eg, left wing, then right wing etc..) I just put in an order for two sets for PA-22's the other day.

Yep, I learned that too. Those templates stick to the vg's pretty good if you don't get them off in time.

A hair dryer to warm and soften the adhesive of the green template tape makes removal easier, especially if you left it on overnight and it got cold.

And don't get all carried away when putting that template on, it does not have to be firmly pressed down everywhere. Just light pressure, just enough to of course allow for accurate placement of the vg's, and so that it follows the string line, but the entire template does not have to be stuck down tight everywhere else. NOT sticking it all down firmly really helps in it's removal. And yeah, get it off ASAP.

As to their glue, I used some 8 year old opened glue to stick down a few VG's on the rear of my hatchback car, kind of a worse case to see how good that glue is. A year later they are all still there, as are all the ones on the plane, good glue!
