The reason is that all of the refiners in the third world are finally converting to unleaded auto fuel production and diesel, with the help of the U.N. That target date has been the end of 2012. As we have been reporting on the
GAFuels blog for the last two years, the only plant in the world that makes TEL (the "lead" in gasoline) will probably stop making it after 2012 because the U.S. avgas market is no market at all for them.
If you can burn auto fuel, support the airports that carry it, because there is a chance that the day will come when it is all that's available.
Unfortunately there is also the possibility that ethanol free gasoline may also completely disappear about the end of 2012. According to the mandatory ethanol quotas in EISA 2007 the amount of ethanol that must be blended in gasoline will completely swamp the gasoline pool by the end of next year. 2013 could be the perfect storm for aviation fuel.
