Automagic login??

(Almost) every time I come here I have to re-login.
Sometimes I'm "welcome" most times not. WTF??
Other sites remember me.

Re: Automagic login??

If I forget and let my anti-virus clean my computer it erases all the cookies and I have to try to remember all my usernames and passwords.

Re: Automagic login??

Check your cookie settings. It should remember depending on what browser you're using.

Re: Automagic login??

Yep, if I have my registry cleaner wipe everything, I expect to have to re-enter stuff for all websites. My antivirus does not clear cookies, just scans 'em.

I have barebones IE 9, set to delete temp. internet files on exit, but not cookies. This is a fairly new phenomenon, say the last month or so. :(

Re: Automagic login??

Bump
This site USED to remember me, all others do. SOMETIMES it remembers (automagic login) but lately it's manual login every time. It doesn't matter if I've showered today or not.

Re: Automagic login??

Don't use Internet Explorer.

My favorite: http://www.google.com/chrome/

It's fast, uses less memory, and shows web pages how they're designed to be shown. In fact, anyone using Firefox, I'd recommend switching too.

Re: Automagic login??

Safari gets it right most of the time but seems to forget my auto-login several times over (say) a day or two. Then everything is fine for a month. It just wears my poor little old fingers to the bone! (kidding)

Re: Automagic login??

Be careful what you wish for. Automatic login also means that anyone will be automatically logged into your account from whatever computer or device you last accessed the site from. Heck. I had a friend borrow my phone to check message. A couple days later I popped open the browser app, hit back browse and had full access to the e-mail account. I logged out and was miffed at the company for not having a timeout. Nobody should be able to do that.

Re: Automagic login??

OK Zane, I got the Chrome.
I have 1.5" on both sides of my screen blank! Can't find the button to make it full screen.
Do you "do" Chrome support? :)

Re: Automagic login??

I don't do any support. I'm just telling you what works for me, and that Internet Explorer is a known lemon. Its cookie-handling is an unknown due many people disabling the features that make cookie-based automatic login possible because they think they're securing their system. Or, antivirus does it for you. I don't know, haven't used Windows in over a decade.

If you can't make the cookie-based "Log me in automatically each visit" feature work, you might try a product like LastPass, which I can recommend.

Tough to diagnose anything when I can't reproduce the problem on my system.

Re: Automagic login??

Well, like I said, my automagic logins work on all other sites.
Sorry I asked.

Re: Automagic login??

What steps did you take to diagnose the problem?

If it's persisting the login information in a cookie, then your problem is either likely that
1) something is deleting the cookie, or
2) something is blocking the cookie

Did you verify that the cookie is getting written?

Find the directory where the cookies are stored. I just looked at a Windows machine that was running IE9, and it was putting them in the following folder: C:\Users\kevbert\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files. Use file explorer or equivalent to view the directory contents. Sort by date so newest is at top. Run IE9. Delete your cookies from IE9/Tools/Internet Options. Log in to BCP, making sure you click the "Log me on automatically each visit" checkbox. Go back to file explorer. There should be a new file at the top. It's a text file, you can open it in notepad, wordpad, etc. Mostly it's a bunch of gibberish numbers, but if it's the BCP cookie, it will show the text "backcountrypilot.org" in there somewhere in plain text. If the cookie file doesn't show up, then something is blocking it, and that is the problem.

Does the cookie disappear when you close IE?

Switch back to IE9. Close it. Go to the file explorer. Verify that you can still open and view the cookie text. If it is now gone, then IE is likely deleting the cookie at application exit, and that is the problem.

Does the cookie disappear before the next time you try to browse BCP.org?

Write down the filename of the cookie. The next time you experience automatic login failure, verify that the cookie is still present. If not, something deleted it, and that is the problem.

Could be something is eating your cookie, too.

BINGO.
I have IE10 so the path was a bit different. Cookies disappearing when I closed it.
I found a box checked "Clear browsing history on exit". Fine print included cookies.
So now BCP cookie saved, but that doesn't explain why ALL my other automagic logins always worked! ? :( ?

Thanks Kev, saved a few mouse clicks!

Re: Automagic login??

Kinda works now.
Still no automagic login, but when I click on the "login" button, it logs me in without further ado.
Weird, but better. :) Waiting on the promised new software to see what changes!
