Autopilot options for a 180

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Autopilot options for a 180

Entertaining the idea of installing a autopilot in my 58 180 in the future. Does anyone have any good advice for what system to use? Do the avionics require a field approval if its not standard?

I've seen some Stec 50 for sale on barnstormers complete taken out of a 172, would the servo mounts for Cessna 100 series aircraft be similar or would it be a custom install no matter what??

Thanks appreciate any info.

Re: Autopilot options for a 180

I have an stec 50 in a 182B and I like it a lot. Cus I have the trimable stabilizer it will be the same as the one for you. The one for a 172 will not work an I do believe that the auto pilot guys will not sell an STC to you for a used auto pilot. I was thinking of selling mine and was told this. Do not buy a used one tell you have researched the paperwork unless you are buying mine. :D

Remember that the STC or Field Approval goes with the plane, not the equipment.

Just remembered, I have a used Brittan auto pilot that came out on my first 182B that will work on your plane. Send me a bag of cowel screws with a six pack of Pepsi and pay for shipping and it is all yours. =D>

Thanks for the input and PM's everyone, I think for now I'll go without not worth the money and weight.

Plus my plane is getting put on a extreme diet this winter going to try and shed 100LBS. Sitting about 1730 right now. Guess that's the Cub driver in me..

I have a Stec 50 in my 54 180. It is incredible. I have it coupled to the 430w, and the gpss is amazing.

I think stec is funny about paperwork, so do your research.

We tried to put the Stec in the '55 180 a few years back and nobody would touch it because the STC did not cover the Sportsman STOL kit that was already in place. Funny thing is if we would have installed the auto pilot first and then the STOL kit then there would have been no problem (so we were told). I love rules that don't make sense.

I have the STec 50 in my 180. I also have the Horton STOL kit and there was no problems with the paperwork, maybe because they were installed at the same time.

Don't quote me on this, but if I remember correctly there were one or two STOL kits on the STC but the Sportsman was not one of them. And perhaps you're right in that the fact that they were installed at the same time made it a non issue?!
